Is the Man Behind the Curtain Going to be Arrested?

Well, here’s one that is definitely true. Some years ago, perhaps 20 or so, I’m not sure, there a get together of a bunch of students at HCHC, in a students room. Three of the students were a seminarian, as well as 2 archimandrites from Greece studying in the school of theology. As the party was breaking up one of the archimandrites, shall we say, improperly grabbed the young seminarian, in a definitely sexual way. The young man punched the archimandrite. The disciplinary committee, three senior faculty, all priests, recommended that the archimandrite not be allowed to graduate a few months hence and should return to Greece. That decision was overturned (I don’t remember by whom). Instead, the young man was suspended, the archimandrite was allowed to graduate, and when the 3 members of the disciplinary committee objected, they were suspended. Nuff’ said, no?

Memory Eternal

Look for an interesting reaction from the GOA and especially some of the laypeople. Those laypeople leading the charge against Elder Ephraim and his monasteries are very wealthy Greek American who believe they run the archdiocese, and to some extent, and in some ways, they do. What they, and the hierarchy, refuse to admit is that Elder Ephraim was so successful because he filled a void in the spiritual life of the GOA that was there for the taking. But the GOA had been secularized for so long that there were two over riding concerns. The first was that the metropolises were losing money that was going to support his monasteries and, second, that this fundamentalism, as they call it, was ruing parishes. All of which shows an extraordinary ignorance of Orthodox spiritual life.

What Unity Looks Like

The old calendar churches in Romania and Bulgaria have joined with the old calendar Genuine Orthodox Christians in Greece. There are connections in other countries as well, and the GOC is growing here in the US and Canada.

They Mocked a Kid

Well, George, the President yesterday said to (Mrs) Rep Dingle, who took over for her husband, the late Rep John Dingle (who was respected and loved by just about everyone on both sides of the aisle), that he was sure he was looking “up” (get it?) at her. Do you think this is ok? Certainly as shameful as the subject of this story.

Calling a Spade a Spade

The EP’s metropolitan in Italy is in Milan and not Rome. Why? Because, ecclesiologically speaking, if he, or any other Orthodox bishop for that matter, was in Rome then that bishop could be considered Pope.

As far as Russia is concerned, there was, and quite probably continues to exist, an underground church. These are not Old Believers. There will always be bishops who know and proclaim the true faith.

One of the sticking points between Moscow, and those who agreed with the MP, and Constantinople regarding the council in Crete, was the number of bishops each church could send. A true council, or synod, is usually comprised of all, or as many as possible, of each church’s bishops. Kirill has been consecrating new bishops for a number of years and now has almost 400. Any wonder why the EP didn’t want full representation from each church?

The Romper Room of the Elite

Hah! This has been going on for decades, back to the 50s. Almost every parish does this. And we’re talking big money and serious prizes.

What has been left unsaid is the question of whether an Orthodox Christian should be involved in the casino business.

Looks Like the GOA Scandal Hit the Big-Time

There is no proof that Fr. Karloutsos, or anyone else for that matteer, at the Archdiocese lent money to Catsimatidis to buy anything. That story has been around the block a few times. If anyone has proof this happened then please post it so all may see and believe. As for money being used to settle molestation suits, insurance paid some and Michael Jaharis (and perhaps others) contributed millions.

Bartholomew Says Union is Inevitable

He was born in Argentina. Received his theological education in Thessalonika, Balamand and Rome (Catholic University of Thomas Aquinas) and received doctorates from Thessalonika and Rome conceerning St John of Damascus, St. Gregory Palamas and Thomas Aquinas. (Brief synopsis of part of the article from the Greek found through Google on the EP website)
He has also been involved in ecumenical circles, the WCC, etc.
Draw your own conclusions.

The Treason of Isengard

George, just in from Romfea. A Roman Catholic cardinal passed out the bread from the artoklasia at the vespers for St. Demetrios in a (Greek) Orthodox church in Aachen, Germany. I’m not sure what was worse, allowing him to do this, seeing Orthodox people kissing his hand as they were given the bread, or noticing that the church has a barely 3 foot high iconostasion (with icons on it). So discouraging.

Is the GOA Divesting Itself of Multiple Parishes?

The 2020 GOA budget allocates $1.5 million for the Patriarchate.

What “New Gospel” Is This?

The Old Calendarists certainly don’t feel strange. The calendar issue by itself is no longer the driving force behind what keeps Old Calendarists separate. It is ecumenism, joint prayer, new theology and submission to the secularism of the modern world that has infected Orthodoxy that make “world Orthodoxy”, whatever that is, think of Old Calendarists as strange. It is interesting to note that of late there has been some consolidation not only among some Greek Old Calendarists but also the Greeks with Old Calendarists in Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, etc. Also, lest we forget, it was ROCOR that originally gave the Greek Old Calendarists their validity. GOA Archbishop Iakovos went to Metropolitan Anastasy’s wake when the Metropolitan reposed. When asked why he went to the wake, Archbishop Iakovos said he went to pay his respects because Metropolitan Anastasy was a real bishop.

When Is an Autocephalous Church not an Autocephalous Church?

Can we please get rid of this notion of a “leader” of the Orthodox Church, regardless of who claims the dubious title, be he Greek, Russian, etc? There is no “leader” of the Church, there are only heads of autocephalous churches.
