  1. I had wanted say that with regards to abortion and gayness and euphanasia, we all know what the teaching of the Church is. End of.
    But I am concerned if the Orthodox church just closes it’s eyes sitting on the winifred oprah couch, or joins the ranting hating Culture wars.
    I DESPISE, DISASSOCIATE MYSELF PUBLICALLY, FROM BOTH OF THESE SICK OPTIONS.
    We need as Orthodox Christians, ARE WE STILL!? to remember that for Christ there was the individual sinner, and their individual life. If we do not have that, we are just a protestant moralistic echo chamber.
    I could go on about my experiences of a career in mental health and dealing in this field amongst others or my Charity stint in Romania working with broken families and trafficked kids. And my own God parents gay greek priest son .
    But I will leave except to says,those who shout too loudly maybe cover themselves, and those who sit on the oprah couch, forget Christ. They both forget Christ.

    • As always an add on.
      I think we need to distinguish between  the individual circumstances of people being gay, or seeking an abortion, euphanasia etc and the ‘ gay, abortion, euphanasia rights movement, which as most ideology does not give a cuss about THE INDIVIDUAL.
      And of course the hetero as well as promoted gay life style which is all about comercialisation of crude Sex for a buck. No money, and it would all disapear.
      Colleagues who specialised in the field told me that today’s gay kids, far from feeling free, feel under more stress and pressure. As their hetero counrerparts.  Social media a big part to blame.
      In Uk. Marriage has long gone.  At the meal organised when i retired before moving  here, of the 40 people, nurses, doctors etc there, the only married couple were my Romanian friends, marius and gabby apart from us!!  .  Oh. And two gay couples, one female, one male, who both had civil partnerships.
      I support civil partnership.  Anything that gives a stronger base to secular society is to be welcome.  It’s a legal thing.
      Re Marriage, yes it’s between one man and one woman, as mine was!!  But that is a Christian understanding and Sadly we Christians have to get it that we no longer live in a Christian society.  Mostly by our own doing.
      We have to get it, and this a big hurdle for the Church, that what ever else is going on in Russia etc,  that here in the west we live in pagan times.  The sooner we accept this the better and it is with renewed opportunity if we do not retreat to our little corner marked religion, as the late Fr Alexander Schememn wrote. And bear witness to Christ. And we cannot do thst at least Greek USA, until u send the effete corrupt carpet baggers back to Istambul to their pretend monastery and churches and Root out the manuellas and rest.

    Once again, I am ever so humbled by your ever so kind words. I cannot thank you enough and am surely not deserving of the accolades.

    I have been thinking lately perhaps the title of this thread could be changed to “Eastern Orthodox Christian News from Around the World” or something similar.

    As always, it is my utmost pleasure to provide the followers of Monomakhos with updated news from around the Orthodox Christian world. I really do consider it a blessing and an honor to be able to do so and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Wishing my brothers and sisters in Christ, a blessed, safe and enjoyable summer. God bless you all!

    • George Michalopulos says

      GS. speaking for all of us, we can’t thank you enough.

      Keep up the good work! We’ll always leave the door open for you.

    • You deeply deserving.  U cook the food. We just eat it!!

    Ecumenical Patriarch: In the City of Constantine, we keep guarding the Greek nation’s lifetime place
    by NewsRoom

    “The word expressing our truth is ‘keep’. Because God has ordained us to preserve here, in the City of Constantine, the place and the way of life of the Greek Nation. We continue to keep open the temples of Romiosyne, our chapels, our monasteries and our schools, to take care of the tombs of our ancestors. We continue because we belong to the Polis. Here is our future, in the place where the past unfolded and the present unfolds. We continue, not only because we want to but also because it is our duty”.

    Chicago Metropolis Seeking $288,000 in Additional Donations

    • Fed up and disgusted says

      Anyone who gives any money to the GOA or to any of its dioceses — especially during special appeals to help “save” it — needs to have his head examined.
      I don’t know how people can stomach tithing or donating any money at all to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
      (I also don’t know how anyone can stomach being an active parishioner of the GOA, but then again, I’ve never fully identified with my partially Greek ancestry.  I suppose if the “Greek” thing meant more to me or if I had warm memories of my Hellenic heritage from my family, then I might feel differently.  But by far, the Hellenic part of my family are/were among the most emotionally unbalanced, abusive, vindictive, and dangerous people I know — certainly Orthodox in name only, and many of them rejected the Church altogether.  And then the priest would obsequiously serve Holy Communion to them, no-questions-asked, as long as you did the Greek thing…  Those clergy that didn’t or who weren’t Greek enough were run out of town.)
      It looks like the new Archbishop is reinstituting the good ol’ Greekness requirement for the GOA priesthood.  So much for the catholicity of our faith, huh.  So much for “neither Jew nor Greek…”  Why do they bother at playing being Orthodox Christian?
      The big-name GOA donors apparently donate so they’re invited to rub shoulders with the new Archbishop or with the EP (but again, why?  what does that get you?  is stroking one’s ego reason enough?).
      If one must donate to the Greek churches in America, then donate to one of the monasteries that were begun by Elder Ephraim of Arizona — by far, these monasteries are the healthiest thing going in the GOA today.
      Christ has been the only way to heal my anger and bitterness toward the GOA and to set a healthy boundary, so that I never again willingly put myself in the position to be hurt and abused by those in the GOA.

    • Based on the report, it is absolutely clear that the GOA is in need of spiritual renewal. The only path to renewal is repentance both individually and corporately. What is needed is not building a national shrine, unity of the homogenia or transparency but repentance. Elpi should proclaim a year of repentance. Only through repentance is God involved. Any other focus is just a bandaid on an open laceration.

    • I found it interesting, even somewhat encouraging, that the priorities reflected in the details of this survey appear to be relatively healthy.  A bit low on outreach and evangelism, though not, I suspect, any lower overall than what one would find in most other jurisdictions.
      I also found it interesting that they do not seem to reflect the priorities expressed (thus far, at least) by the new archbishop.

    • As a former uk resident.  They now want to bring that archdiocese to heal.
      We saw the papal Fantasy of Constantinople in mid 1990s with his. UK  visits and totally failed effort to whip up papal like hysteria.  He dismissively called the archdiocese, ‘το φισιατικο’,  to fishiatiko,  fish and chicken shop after the restaurants of so many greek cypriots
      These ‘ bachelors ‘ need to find a job

      • Loulias from what is commonly understood in Greece, should merge well with the archimandrite of St Sophia, Bayswater, London.
        Gossip? No. It’s hypocrisy parading as piety with corruption understated that always needs calling out.
        He will have to get used to no organs though and the cypriots will make clear to him on that.

    Serbian Bishop Accuses Montenegro of Eying Church’s Property
    Samir Kajosevic Podgorica BIRN

    Ahead of a vote in parliament on a new bill on religious communities, the Serbian Orthodox Church has accused the government of plotting a land grab – and has vowed to defend its assets with its life.

    https://balkaninsight.com/2019/06/07/serbian-bishop-accuses-montenegro-of-eying-churchs-property/

    • Quote from the above story:

      “Relations between the government and the Serbian Church have historically been fractious, mainly because the government sees the Church as the long arm of Serbia, and as hostile to the country’s independence, which was re-established after a referendum in 2006. For its part, the Church sees the pro-Western government as hostile to what it views as Montenegro’s Serbian heritage.”

    How Many People are Needed to Advise the Metropolitan of Chicago?

    http://protectingorthodoxchurch.blogspot.com/2019/06/how-many-people-are-needed-to-advise.html?m=1

    • Number of people needed to advise Metropolitan of Chicago. ??  AS MANY AS THE GRAVY TRAIN OF PRETENSIONS ADMITS,  AND GOOD GOD. The homeless and dirty on our boat cruise!!   Send them to a strange guy called Christ.
      Ps. He is becoming a bit of a pain in neck. Might get crucified if not careful.!!
      And in Russia a Metropolitan has more than a handful of failing parishes under him

      You know one priest who is dedicated, works hard,  in tune with life and has growed his Parish almost double is the priest of St John Baptist, Tampa Florida.
      I have strong  difference of  view to him re liturgy ( organs etc)  and priestly shaving, although respect his honesty in this respect above the token beardies which we seeing not just in America greek Orthodoxy,  now as witness the Catholic looking Romanian priest in the blessing of a sculpture, of a priest as happens. And what a difference in appearance between the priest sculpture and the blessing priest., Shameful, as
      the blessing priest looks scruffy with two day’s growth.  Get a shave I say.
      But anyway. Fr STAVROS Akronakis, is the Tampa man and sincere priest who as I say in certain matters, I disagree strongly. But good dedicated man and priest..

      Re Europe. There is a very good english travel writer. Patrick Leigh Fermor, (+2011 Greece) who in mid 1930s walked across Europe from UK through central Europe to istambul and then to Greece and Mount Athos where stayed for while.  He descriptions of a peasant and aristocratic middle Europe and jewry is facinating and haunting, knowing what was to come. . And Holy Week at Esterhazzy, the seat of the cardinal of Hungary, is magical. He also described early Hitler Germany when nazism was still not totally dominant.
      He was also in Greece in war as uk secret agent and with wife made his life there.
      He wrote some amazing very readable travel books u guys should read , he was well connected very upper drawer  brit!!  But walking through pre -war Romania and Bulgaria, including staying in city I live in now.  Plus in  Greece and Mount Athos. Facinating on Athos and later about different parts of Greece and concept of Romiosini as opposed to Hellenism. Also wrote about Orthodoxy to degree.
      One interesting point.  In Romania etc inter war, there were relatively large uniate churches.  He contrasts their short haired and clipped bearded clergy, to the Orthodox full beard and hair. Obviously to him it was an immediate point of difference.
      Poor man now would think uniatism is widespread.

      Ioannis, further proof that the Catholic Church has gone down the Episcopalian path. It is my hope, that the Orthodox Church may be seen as a viable option for disenfranchised Catholics. They must be really hurting. I remember the internal crisis I felt when they installed female priests in my parish. I just oculdn’t go back.

  90. I have to admit to sone wry humour re Mr Denisenko.  On the one hand his double faced, self serving behaviour re Constantinople in oilily sliding between the lines of what he agreed, is exactly his behaviour with the Moscow Patrarchate.
    I am sure Bartholomaios will feel sympathy for Kyril!!
    On the other, as it were, Denisenko is totally correct in that an autocephalous church needs no permission to  call a local church Council. He clearly understanding he was not granted autocephaly in real Terms. And he had no intentions, as in 1990, of taking back seat.
    If all not so tragic, i would laugh.

  105. PROJECT OF ‘INDEPENDENT’ ORTHODOX CHURCH OF UKRAINE IS COLLAPSING BECAUSE OF INTERNAL POWER STRUGGLE
    Project Of ‘Independent’ Orthodox Church Of Ukraine Is Collapsing Because Of Internal Power Struggle

    The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople is pressuring Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece’s Mount Athos in an attempt to force them to recognize the non-canonic Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), vimaorthodoxias.gr reported on June 11.
    According to the report, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I demanded explanations why a delegation of the OCU was rejected in Saint Panteleimon Monastery. The Greek media outlet added that Bartholomew I is openly supporting the OCU despite rejection of this non-canonic entity by most of the Orthodox world. The report added that Bartholomew I even threatened Saint Panteleimon Monastery with a kind of sanctions if such a situation repeats in the future:

    Archbishop Elpidophoros: I come to serve, and not to be served
    by NewsRoom
    Jun 20, 2019 | 09:44

    Archbishop Elpidophoros received an enthusiastic welcome upon his arrival in the United States as hundreds of faithful from various New York area parishes gathered today June 19, 2019, in the arrival hall of Terminal One, at John F. Kennedy International Airport to welcome their new spiritual leader. Archbishop Elpidophoros of America will be enthroned on Saturday June 22, 2019.

    • AB Elpi said all the correct things in Enlish, my understanding of Greek is limited. My hope and prayer is that his words reflect his true sentiments and we’re not just nice talking points given by some coach.

      • George Michalopulos says

        JK, we’ll know if his words are serious if he calls up the other American primates and asks them to do a complete and total “do-over” of the EAUSA. He could start by saying “I won’t be the president, let’s have a rotating presidency and base it on alphabetical order” or something like that.

    • George Michalopulos says

      I’m sorry, but I have read this Romfea news-story now twice and I can’t find those words which they write that he said. Is there another link?

      • Greatly Saddened says

        GM … please see GOA281 for the transcript and GOA282 for the video.

          One thing to keep in mind. His Eminence Archbishop Elect Elpidophoros is in a unique position. He is the heir apparent to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. That alone changes things.

    • Spiritual Gangster says

      The Archbishop has arrived – roll out the red carpet!

      To cover up all those pentagrams!

        His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros
        Arrival Remarks
        June 19, 2019
        John F. Kennedy Airport, New York
        Your Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston,Your Eminences and Graces, Most Reverend Members of the Holy Eparchial Synod and Bishops of the Holy Archdiocese of America,Honorable Consul General of Greece, Konstantinos Koutras,My Beloved Spiritual Children of the Holy Archdiocese of America,.”
        (highlighting mine)..

        Just two comments:
        (1)
        The Apostle greeted each other with the words “brother, brethren”.
        Elpidoforos greeted his brother bishops otherwise, …better than the Apostles did. If he said “Brethren” to them, it would suggest equality!

        (2)
        Apostle Paul instructed Timothy, Bishop of  Ephesus:
        ” Rebuke not an elder, but intreat [him] as a father; [and] the younger men as brethren;The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. “( 1 Timothy, 5:1-2 )

        Elpidoforos apparently does not need St.Pauls instructions and patronized/intimidated all the people present, as spiritual Children, because he is certainly more spiritual than any one of those present.

        • “The truth of the story lies in the details.”

          Elpidoforos words subtly suggest,
          “keep quiet, children, and do as I say!”

        • George Michalopulos says

          I’m hoping that this is because English isn’t his first tongue (but his fourth) and that he doesn’t understand the necessary nuance. I’d like to cut him that much slack. However, given the track record of the Phanar as well as his own heterodox. quasi-RC teaching regarding the nature of the relationship between Cpole and the other primates, I’m not going to hold my breath.

          • George,
            ( 1 Timothy, 5:1-2 ) is very clear what it means.
            How can Elpidoforos  “intreat” the others as fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters if he addresses them as “children”?

            Isn’t that intimidating?

            He says that in Greek too!

            • George Michalopulos says

              Well then, we’re screwed.

              Glad I’m not in the GOA anymore. Hopefully he won’t be attempting a hostile takeover of the other jurisdictions.

              • anonymous says

                George Michalopulos
                Since the Church of Constantinople does not recognize the autocephaly of the OCA
                But somehow still recognizes it
                I’m sure the OCA is just viewed to them as juristictionally separated “children”
                Russian mission roots are just an unfortunate dismissable thing
                And you, a Greek, who needs to be “united” together with all other Greeks per stated mission
                In practical terms, you are still in the GOA in their minds.  You are just a bit uninvolved right now
                You just need to be properly reformed/re-educated/re-assimilated
                As far as being screwed
                “Things aren’t as bad as they seem, gypsy boy . . . No . . . They are much worse!”
                -The Inspector General

              • How can Elpidophoros even begin any attempts at hostile takeovers of the jurisdictions in the US?
                Will he attempt to nationalize the assembly of SCOBA in the name of the EP?
                The non-EP bishops would never stand for it.   The GOA archbishop don’t have that kind of muscle!

                • George Michalopulos says

                  I imagine that he is the advance guard for the CP, who has every intention of coming here and try to pull a Ukraine, i.e. telling all the other bishops that their dioceses are null and void to wait for future assignments.

                  • EP brags that they already have in the US: GOA, Arabs (from the former JP), Ukrainians and the Carpatho-Russians and that the EP is the truly pan-Orthodox body in America.
                    Elpidophoros has said:
                    “With regards to the United States, the submission to the First Throne of the Church, that is, to the Ecumenical Patriarchate is not only fitting with the American society and mentality but also it opens up the horizons of possibilities for this much-promising region, which is capable of becoming an example of Pan-Orthodox unity and witness.”
                    I’m aghast at his willful ignorance and presumptuousness.  Since when has “submission” to any kind of throne ever been “fitting with the American society and mentality”?!
                    He don’t know us too good do he?

                    • Look u yanks told the British where to go, so i expect no less of the Phanar.
                      Here in the Balkans Greek domination in Bulgaria here, Romania and Serbia was regarded as an equal evil to the turks.The greek bishops bled the Slav peasants dry to feed the Phanar.   Granted it was a different animals to today,  but it was still an imperial mindset.   You are in the USA of 2019.Remember that!!

          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          This is all just noise for its own sake, a tempest in a teapot.
          Whatever his good points and bad points might be, Abp Elpidophoros is speaking completely within the Tradition to describe the faithful of his archdiocese , both the clergy and the laity, as his children, and to address them as such.
          Since ancient times, our service books have included prayers and petitions for ‘our lord and father (N), bishop of (N)’. All priests and monks are called ‘father’, whether their children, like those of the bishop, are physical, spiritual, or metaphoric.
          Since it’s clear that no man can be a father without children in one or more of these senses, it is not unreasonable for bishops, priests, and monks to address those for whom they must answer to God as their ‘children’.
          • Monk James Silver, OK,
            please tell me then
            how do you think
            that Bartholomew applies ( 1 Timothy, 5:1-2 )?
            You really call that,
            “This is all just noise for its own sake, a tempest in a teapot.” ?
            • Of course, I mean Bartholomew and his “Child” Elpidoforos.
              How do they apply these instructions of St.Paul,
              with the CLEAR meaning they consider the others as St.Paul instructs.
              And since you know many things,
              could you please give me one link of theirs words which applies the above instruction?
              • Monk James Silver says
                You are obviously able to read the scriptures, ‘Ioannis’, but it’s just as obvious that you don’t understand what you’re reading.
                Your exegetic efforts could use a little help from the model offered by the humility of the Ethiopian official (Acts 8:26 ff) who was reading aloud from the prophecy of Isaiah. When the apostle Philip, who was placed there by the Holy Spirit of God, heard the man reading, he asked him if he understood those words. The Ethiopian replied that he wouldn’t be able to understand them unless someone explained their meaning to him.
                So St Philip explained the prophecy to the Ethiopian, who immediately came to faith in Christ and asked for baptism. That is the first scriptural example of the authority of the Tradition to interpret the Bible within The Church.
                But you write as though you are influenced by some sort of Protestant proof-texting theory, which Orthodox Christianity does not follow. Please recall that the Bible is only one part (albeit the most important part) of the written part of the authentically Orthodox Catholic Christian Tradition.
                Now, in reference to 1 Timothy 5:1-2, it’s clear that St Paul is teaching his ‘child Timothy’ (as he addresses him) how to relate to people in general. He’s not describing the sort of teacher-disciple relationship he has with St Timothy or St Titus or any other person to whom he entrusted The Tradition which he had received. In his turn, St Timothy would have written and spoken to his own disciples addressing them as his children.
                Now, as far as what sense Bartholomew makes of all this, I recommend that you ask Bartholomew, not James..
                • Monk James Silver,
                  “‘Ioannis’, but it’s just as obvious that you don’t understand what you’re reading”.
                  I am sorry, I could say exactly the same thing about you.
                  It is very easy for you to characterize somebody’s behaviour, knowledge, or capabilities, but unfortunately you do not offer a proof.
                  I wish/hope you are absolutely right about your own capabilities. Example: A few days ago (if I am not mistaken) you expressed your self-confidence of being an expert in translations. I wish you to be aninfallible man, very useful to our Church. I am truly sorry if I have given a similar impression about myself. I do not mean to write my “wise” explanations. I am utilising my common sense and read the Bible AND the Church Fathers (thus no Protestant influence as you diagnosed as an expert Doctor of the Church)
                  The example of the Ethiopian you mention does not apply to an Orthodox Christian who has read not only the Bible BUT the Fathers as well (the Ethiopian did not have that luxury).So abad example, try something else to defend your hero Elpidoforos.
                  Now, you wrote, “…Elpidophoros is speaking completely within the Tradition…”. So you did defend him YOURSELF. You did not recommend that I(!) ask him to explain to me why he said “Children” (τέκνα).So, it is only logical for me to ask you, “How do they (Elpid. & Barth.) apply these instructions of St.Paul”
                  So, if somebody agrees with you and Elpidoforos, then OK.
                  If he doesn’t agree with you, and if you want to avoid a straight reply, then you say things like e.g.
                  “you don’t understand”
                  “ask him, not me”,
                  “how do you prove that?” etc.
                  I am afraid your …reply is unacceptable.
                  I can imagine you esteem B. & E. very much and love them in Christ, but that is exactly why you must help them (for the Church and their Souls) by mentioning any faults thy make.
                  Of course you have read Chrysostom’s Homily 3 on the Acts, how easy it is for the clergy to loose theirs souls…
                  Regarding your comment
                  “you are influenced by some sort of Protestant proof-texting theory, which Orthodox Christianity does not follow”
                  I would reply to you,
                  1) please do not allow yourself to get influenced by the Papists
                  2) or, reflecting about it, why do you make such a comment against Protestant influence, when your Hero himself has said that
                  “all religions are pathways of salvation.”?
                  Has he now rejected his Protestant and other friends?
                  • Monk James Silver says
                    Well, ‘Ioannis’, it appears that filtering everything through your preconceptions makes you unable to understand my words any better than you understand St Paul’s, so I think I’ll just end our correspondence here.
                    • Monk James Silver
                      I’ll tell you the direct truth in love in Christ!
                      I am afraid, your method of correspondence is unacceptable especially from a monk!
                      You did the same thing to “anonymous” yesterday.
                      First you intimidate the other person
                      and if he is not convinced you stop the correspondence.
                      You ask the other person to reply to your points,
                      but you avoid replying to his points!!!!
                      That is surely the Bartholomew “Paradigm”!
                      If you understand that you are wrong you stop the conversation.
                      I would expect such a trick from secular people, but not from a monk. But times are changing indeed. I am very sorry.
                      If nothing happens, we’ll see the “Holy Quran” read by FUTURE(!) Orthodox monks, together with the Bible.
                      To use your own method:
                      Please clearly state:
                      Q.7: What are my preconceptions
                      Q.8: Prove they are wrong.
                      And a bonus question:
                      Q.9: Did you know that holy monks, saints of our days in Athos, accepted the strong criticism from the people as a blessing and as an expression of real love from them? But of course you know much better!
                    • Monk James Silver,
                      “Ioannis… it appears that filtering everything through your preconceptions makes you unable to understand my words any better than you understand St Paul’s”.
                      That is really interesting:
                      To understand you and St.Paul,
                      I need to drop my preconceptions and adopt YOURS!
                      Q.10: JUST HOW DO YOU PROVE THAT ????
                      Q.11  How come St.Chrysostom does not agree with you? (see my other message).
                    • Monk James Silver wrote,
                      “Well, ‘Ioannis’, it appears that filtering everything through your preconceptions makes you unable to understand my words any better than you understand St Paul’s, so I think I’ll just end our correspondence here.”
                      If you do that Monk James Silver, and you do not reply to my numbered points, then I think it will be very useful for me to remember this for future reference, as the case may arise.
                  “You are obviously able to read the scriptures, ‘Ioannis’, but it’s just as obvious that you don’t understand what you’re reading.
                  Your exegetic efforts could use a little help from the model offered by the humility of the Ethiopian official (Acts 8:26 ff) who was reading aloud from the prophecy of Isaiah.”
                  In the model you propose to me,
                  Q.1: Do you really consider a baptised Orthodox (me or anybody) to be of the same lack of illumination of an unbaptized person like the Ethiopian (also considering that St.Paul calls (about 40 times!)the baptised persons as “saints” (ἁγίους) ?
                  Q.2: Do you consider a modern Orthodox going to church, listening to numerous sermons, and reading the Fathers, to be as uninformed as the Ethiopian?
                  Q.3: Do you consider yourself (Monk James Silver) to be the equivalent of Apostle Philip to teach a person (me or other) as described in Q.1 and Q.2?
                  If you say you are, how can you prove this? (you ‘ll like this accuracy!).
                  Q.4: Do you NOT know that St. John Chrysostom and other Saints remind/urge us (unlike you) to privately read the Bible? Why do you discourage us by sowing doubt whether we can understand it? And who should we ask for help? How do you prove that?
                  Q.5: Why do you use a paraphrase of the R.C. standpoint that
                  “The Bible says this but you don’t understand it. In case there is a difference between the Bible and the Pope you shall believe the Pope!”
                  You are a selfconfidend learned person: Have you also read Bp.Paul Ballester’s book on his conversion from R.C. to Orthodoxy.
                  The above standpoint of the Pope convinced him to become Orthodox.
                  Q.6: You stated:
                  “Now, in reference to 1 Timothy 5:1-2, it’s clear that St Paul is teaching his ‘child Timothy’ (as he addresses him) how to relate to people in general. He’s not describing the sort of teacher-disciple relationship…”
                  YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY AND UTTERLY WRONG!
                  He is indeed including a teacher-disciple relationship!
                  Please read Chrysostom’s homily extract below:
                  (How come you didn’t know the text below?)
                  St. John Chrysostom, Homily 1 Timothy 4:11-14
                  Chap. v. ver. 1. “Rebuke not an elder.”
                  Is he now speaking of the order? I think not, but of any elderly man. What then if he
                  should need correction? Do not rebuke him, but address him as you would a father offending.
                  Ver. 1. “The elder women as mothers, the younger men as brethren; the younger women
                  as sisters, with all purity.”
                  Rebuke is in its own nature offensive, particularly when it is addressed to an old man,
                  and when it proceeds from a young man too, there is a threefold show of forwardness. By
                  the manner and the mildness of it, therefore, he would soften it. For it is possible to reprove
                  without offense, if one will only make a point of this: it requires great discretion, but it may
                  be done.
                  “The younger men as brethren.” Why does he recommend this too here? With a view
                  to the high spirit natural to young men, whence it is proper to soften reproof to them also
                  with moderation.
                  “The younger women as sisters”; he adds, “with all purity.” Tell me not, he means, of
                  merely avoiding sinful intercourse with them. There should not be even a suspicion. For
                  since intimacy with young women is always suspicious, and yet a Bishop cannot always
                  avoid it, he shows by adding these words, that “all purity” is required in such intimacy. But
                  does Paul give this advice to Timothy? Yes, he says, for I am speaking to the world through
                  him. But if Timothy was thus advised, let others consider what sort of conduct is required
                  of them, that they should give no ground for suspicion, no shadow of pretext, to those who
                  wish to calumniate.
                  I’ll borrow/paraphrase your request to “anonymous’ yesterday:
                  “Please respond to the points I raised” above (Q1 to Q6).
                  For your convenience, I have numbered them.
                  “If you would kindly address those points”, we shall succeed in a logical, consequent and fair conversation.
                  I trust you want that, don’t you?
                • Monk James Silver,
                  I have some more IMPORTANT details for you,
                  which evidently you lack,
                  on the failed example of the Ethiopian,
                  some wise words not from me but from St. John Chrysostom.
                  It matters not whether you have the encouragement to reply to me,
                  I only wish that you know what Chrysostom says, so that
                  you will think twice before you scrutinize/intimidate somebody else that they can’t understand the Bible without help from experts like you.
                  You will learn from the Saint that an Orthodox can read the Bible privately AND exert his understanding,  :
                  St. Chrysostom:Homily on the passage (Matt. xxvi. 19), “father if it be possible let this cup pass from me,” etc.,and against marcionists and manichæans.
                  In order then to build a wall against their attack and to relieve those who are in perplexityfrom bewilderment and confusion, let us take in hand the words which have been cited, anddwell upon the passage, and dive into the depths of its meanings. For reading does not suffice unless knowledge also be added to it. Even as the eunuch of Candace read, but until one came who instructed him in the meaning of what he was reading he derived no great benefitfrom it. In order therefore that you may not be in the same condition attend to what is said, exert your understanding, let me have your mind disengaged from other thoughts, let your eye be quick-sighted, your intention earnest: let your soul be set free from worldly cares, that we may not sow our words upon the thorns, or upon the rock, or by the way side, but that we may till a deep and rich field, and so reap an abundant harvest. For if you thus attend to what is said you will render my labour lighter and facilitate the discovery of that which you are seeking.
                  • M. Stankovich says
                    Holy Cow! Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
                    So, after dogging Papouli Theodore until he was driven away, you have set your sights on Monk James. With all due respect, judging by your writings and responses, you are quite out of your league to do so. In demanding Monk James agree with you and answer a set of questions specifically worded – and poorly at that – your obvious, clear intention is to attempt to trap. This is, at best, a foolhardy endeavor, disregarding the warning of the Scripture, “He that digs a pit for his neighbour shall fall into it himself: and he that rolls a stone, rolls it upon himself.” (Prov. 26:27) Surely you can find something else to contribute besides harangue?
                    • Fair enough, M. Stankovich.
                      It is very easy to make vague generic, cliche, comments.
                      Please tell me the WORST SINGLE thing I have told Monk James!
                      Will you?
                    • M. Stankovich says
                      “Holy Cow!…”
                      Kyrie Eleison! Lord have mercy!
                      I am sorry, if you don’t mind,as an Orthodox I have nothing to do with the “Holy Cow” and its connotations.
                      Thank you for your kind and polite message.
                      Dear brother in Christ, you have criticized me of
                      1-“Spanish Inquisition”
                      2-“Papouli Theodore until he was driven away”
                      3-“demanding Monk James agree with you”
                      4-“set of questions specifically worded – and”
                      5-“poorly at that”
                      6-“clear intention is to attempt to trap” and “He that digs a pit for his neighbour”
                      7-“you can find something else to contribute”
                      My own questions to Monk James still remain unanswered and the explanation is
                      -by him “being as silent as fish”
                      -by you as being “Spanish Inquisition”.
                      -by me, as a proof that M.J. cannot/will not answer them
                      -by the other readers here, I don’t know.
                      I trust, you being a kind and just/fair person, you will allow me to defend myself (unlike Bartholomew who excommunicated the Theologian N.Sotiropoulos, without allowing him to defend himself, but that is a different story).
                      So here I am replying to the points you made, and unlike you, I do not consider it “Spanish Inquisition” but Christian “Yes,yes and No,no”:
                      1-No, it is not. I am sorry if it looks like that.Read below.
                      2-Don’t worry, Papouli is back today, undaunted, undeterred,undismayed.
                      3-That’s not true! I asked him to reply to the points, not to agree with me!
                      4-Questions must not be vague but accurate and specifically worded. Why is THAT bad?
                      5-Thanks for the hint. English is not my mother tongue. I am sorry about that, it can’t be helped.
                      6-No, brother. I do not want to trap him into a pit, I want to get him out of the pit he is in!
                      7-Really, …is there anything better to always contribute than the words of the Bible and the words of our Holy Fathers like Chrysostom?
                      And now dear brother in Christ,
                      I have some simple questions to you, in turn, I humbly beseech and beg you to answer them, NOT AS SPANISH INQUISITION, but because I really care/want to know how you think exactly:
                      -Why is it OK for M.J. to explicitly ask people to reply to his points, but if I ask him the same, you then say it’s “Spanish Inquisition”? Is it because of the numbering? Too any questions? What?Could you give me one example, what did I ask M.J. which sounded like “Spanish Inquisition”? In other words is this because I numbered the questions? What is my “question-format” that would be approved by you as not “Spanish Inquisition”?
                      -similarly, please mention one of my questions to M.J. which was unacceptable because of “specifically worded”
                      -what would you like me to contribute to this forum, (instead of my reply 7-) just praises to M.J., blind devotion to Bartholomew or what?
                      Please forgive me if I have now written even one inappropriate word to you. I mean it.
                    • M. Stankovich,
                      “So, after dogging Papouli Theodore until he was driven away, you have set your sights on Monk James. ”
                      Why all his?
                      One thing is certain, there is nothing personal, I do not know them, I saw their names 2-3 months ago.
                      From what I gather you are a scientist, a very good one.
                      Another good scientist was Werner von Braun, the “father of missiles” actually a faithful RC (later Evangelical) Christian.
                      He had said,
                      “Religion ist Wissenschaft der Wissenschaften”, or
                      “Religion is Science of Sciences”.
                      Now then, in your own science, if you have a scientific correspondence and another colleague asks you a few questions, then it is not scietific of you if you do not reply.
                      If Religion is “Science of Sciences” then according to Chrysostomic logic, it is even more important to reply to religious questions than to scientific ones.
                      If you believe that Orthodoxy is the True Church from the day of the Pentecost, then our problem becomes even more serious, we should show the best correspondence-behaviour, not to forget, the others who read us (“Look at those Orthodox they can not even converse”!)
                      I therefore  kindly ask you to moderate in this case with your two friends to resume correspondence with me, because my questions certainly are not “Spanish Inquisition” but deep interest!
                      In fact this should apply to all discussions here:
                      Thus, to reply to a question seems to be (in increasing importance):
                      Basic manners
                      Scientific manners
                      Christian manners
                      Orthodox manners!
                      P.S. I agree with you, there may be a bad question and one should ask for rephrasing.
                  • M. Stankovich says
                    Are you familiar with the term λογομαχέω that appears in St. Paul’s First Epistle to Timothy 6:4? St Paul is warning Timothy of those who would teach things other than the doctrine of the church, who “consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words,” or so says the KJV. The Greek text says “war of words,” obviously derived from λογοσ, meaning “word” and μάχη, meaning to battle or engage in combat. And whether or not it is reflected in St. Paul’s message to Timothy, the ancient Greek clearly intended to indicate that λογομαχίας meant a frivolous war of words. While I am not accusing you of wrong teachings, I am of λογομαχία. For this reason, I will not be drawn into what I see as the further distraction of answering questions. You have a most fascinating theory of “manners,” but it is one to which I do not subscribe. I will suggest that it is the Tradition of the Church that the Evangelist John the Theologian is depicted iconographically with his hand covering his mouth. Imagine, he who has the most to say impedes his own mouth from speaking. All things considered, it proved to be one of the greatest lessons of my life.
                    • M. Stankovich, you wrote:
                      “While I am not accusing you of wrong teachings, I am of λογομαχία.”
                      While I am not accusing you of wrong teachings, I am of μονολογία,
                      i.e. μονόλογο, monologue, you want to talk,
                      teach others, but not to reply,
                      unless the other person agrees with you. That is not true DIALOGUE!
                      Thank you very much for your moderating cooperation,
                      come again!
          • Monk James Silver,
            “…Elpidophoros is speaking completely within the Tradition…”
            The foundations of the Tradition
            are the very words of Christ and His Apostles.
            Tradition can not nullify its foundations.
  174. Vatican joins Orthodox, Protestants to proclaim environmentalist ‘Season of Creation’
    Amazon Synod, Anglican Communion, Catholic, Dicastery For Promoting Integral Human Development, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Environment, Environmentalism, Laudato Si’, Orthodox Church, Pope Francis
    ROME, June 19, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — In a letter released on Tuesday by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Christians were called to put Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’ encyclical on the environment into practice.
    Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, and other Protestant ecclesial groupings are being urged to celebrate September as a “Season of Creation” to press for action on the doctrine of climate change. “During the month-long Season of Creation, Christians on six continents work to put Laudato Si’ into practice,” says the letter, which was released on Tuesday by the dicastery. The dicastery asks Christians to “participate in community events to deepen their love for the Creator, creation, and each other.”…
      Patient? Patient for what, exactly?
      The finishing of the St. Nicholas Shrine? I can’t wait!
      They should have put that shine in the Black Hills of South Dakota
      You know, to give that unfinished monument of Crazy Horse something to point at
      Maybe with the inscription, “Ha ha!!”
      The wagons have already been encircled in the GOA for some time now.
      So what are we to be patient about?
      Something tells me whatever they have planned won’t include the new Archbishop traveling here and there throughout the Unites States planting churches for ALL Americans like he’s Johnny Appleseed
      I’m not anticipating excitement for whatever they plan on rolling out at this point
      Just look at the situation in the Ukraine
      Just perfect! The Patriarchate of Kiev is still on the books in Ukraine and Filaret is not without his followers. Epiphany is going to have a hard time getting rid of him, particularly since he flat out lied to him about what his continuing role would be. Another opportunity for bloodshed as if Ukraine needs more, and the fallout will rest directly on the shoulders of the one with delusions of grandeur who mistakenly thinks he is the first OVER equals and doesn’t have to listen to anyone about anything. He’ll go down in history as the cautionary tale in the “What Not to do as a Patriarch” Training 101 Manual; “Remember that crazy old patriarch who brought in those schematics in Ukraine causing all hell to break loose? Don’t be like him. Listen to your brother bishops. The path of a patriarch is not a solitary one. The Holy Spirit does not speak through one person. If you find yourself out of step, it is likely He is not speaking to you.”
      • If he is a patriarch, so are you and me.
      • It’s hilarious..  I’ve never laughed so much.  I have to say. How can anybody advise anybody these days to join a Christian church.   They all rotting .  I’m a believer and I am finding it hard going. We seem to have more crooks and ponces to the square mile than the mafia.
    They have turned the Church on it’s head. You serve them, not them you,  behind the false words and delusional talk.  Someone should tell Elpidophoros that no one interested outside of the ecclesiastical groupies,  as 90% of his Ομογένεια,  have walked Away. Don’t even know he exists,  but elpidophoros don’t cry!!  NOT INTERESTED.  It will be individual parishes that survive,  largely by doing exact opposite of what elpidophoros wants.
He refers to himself as the “abbott” of the Halki school for the last 8 years.  Which is darn interesting considering it is closed.  If he wasn’t elected UNANIMOUSLY I think I’d ask for a recount.  That is some item in a resume.
        I guess if you can put metropolitans over places that no longer exist, it’s not too much of a stretch to place an abbot over a place that closed 4 years after he was born!
    Halki Seminary
    The seminary is located on the site of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, founded by Patriarch Photius I almost a thousand years before the foundation of the theological school. During Ottoman rule the monastery fell into disrepair. In 1844, Patriarch Germanos IV converted the monastery into a school of theology, which was inaugurated on 1 October 1844. All the buildings, except for the 17th-century chapel, were destroyed by the 1894 Istanbul earthquake, but were rebuilt by architect Periklis Fotiadis and inaugurated on 6 October 1896.[3] These buildings were also renovated in the 1950s
    • If only he knew how embarrassing he sounds, how stupid it is.  Reopen Halki.  The list of people who have been sort of educated there is the best reason to keep it closed.  At last something to thank the Turks for.  Add to that his point of honor (!) to throw money at the albatross at the trade center.  He has defined himself as untrustworthy right out of the gate.  He even tries to push for learning Greek! How’s that been working for the last 60 years? He wants to shut things down even faster than they will fall down without his efforts. Gravity accelerates decay fast enough without the help of a bishop. If only there were signs of intelligence.
      • Very well put, Bob.
        Few people know the real truth about the negative value of Halki.
        Saint Nicholas Church:
        Do they really believe that they honor St.Nicholas with such huge expenses for such a …temple?
        I though St.Nicholas preferred to give the money to the poor! (the real Santa Claus).
        • Ioannis. The shrine has become an obscenity.  An ugly one at that.  do u know how much money it will take.? Where is it coming from?
          You see the hypocrisy and bland words. People see and understanding, walk away.  Oh yes the photo ops look good, all is well in american third,forth,  mixed Marriage  generation Hellenism.  Just keep up the facade, it’s 1910 and the FOBs just keep on arriving.
    • Watching the very tedious podcast  it’s fairly obvious that if you don’t speak Greek you don’t count.  I suggest that people contribute totheir local parish in direct proportion to how much of the podcast they understand, how much is in English.  Also, I keep hearing the interesting claim the new fella is the “abbott” of Halki monastery.  I have yet to find a head count for that monastery brotherhood;  is it a non-zero number?  Some years ago the Episcopalians elected a woman to be their presiding bishop.  They needed to invent some “background” for her to cite as church institutional work.  In a parish in Oregon she had been in charge of the adult Sunday school which they decided to name a theological “acadamy”.  She probably had more actual experience than our boy has in his “monastery”.  Abbott!  Let’s see if the brotherhood would fit in a phonebooth or if it simply fits in the mind (awfully small mind) of someone who can write the word down.   Why don’t people react when they are lied to?  If this doesn’t offend, why does it offend when some priest makes off with money?  You have this guy coming.  You deserve him and no better.
      • Greatly Saddened says
        Bob, FYI … I believe Holy Trinity Monastery on Halki has 4 monks.
        • Thank you, I have looked in vain on the web to find any mention of live bodies.  As far as I have been able to see the monastery has just as many monks as there are students at the fabulous acadamy.  How embarrassing.
          • Greatly Saddened says
            My pleasure. I believe it was in a video from the Archon Religious Conference in Germany on you tube, where His Eminence mentioned the number of monks at Holy Trinity Monastery on Halki.
      • Bob. It’s all a potemkin village facade. One monk or four, three now!!     Oh they know how to do it down to the last button now.  They not to blame for the situation of Phanar.  Turkey is by it’s Policies, but Bob, Phanar is to blame for  the pretense and play acting they have become.
        And yes re podcast.  I am  a greek speaking greek and I am appalled. If he was being welcomed as the new bishop of Patra or Corinth,  yes. Be quite natural but not for USA, not for a losely   put,’ Ομογένεια ‘  that 80% plus only speak english or tourists’ greek. What  is he running a club or a church?. Well we know it’s a Catholic church certainly.
        This concept of a ethnic church within USA in 2019 is irrelevant.  It’s a club,  a hobby to keep various people, who would not get on in real world, in pretend pompous crap.
        My contempt for them growing daily.
        We are in the age of artifical human intelligence, gene mapping,  rockets to mars and Black holes and the rest of modern world  with deep spiritual doubt and questioning and what are we presented with,but the pompous ceremonies of the medeval age. And bland meaningless profesorial words.
      When will it finally dawn on the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America that it is in fact in the United States of America and not in Greece.
      With all the non Greek speaking people at today’s events. As well as with the many third, fourth, and fifth generations. It would have been best if there was much less Greek used, so others could have also understood more. The language of this great country of ours is English! Is the Archdiocese so small minded not to comprehend this? Unfortunately, I guess so and how sad!
      • Greatly saddened,  I’m a greek speaking greek national and I find it sad Not the wish for people to know greek. I recommend it for all sorts of reasons and greek Culture is rich  but as you rightly say we are talking of the Church and forth or fifth mixed generation.
        To give elpidophoros his due, he is not a stupid man, but bright and relatively able.  But his brief is to tie the archdiocese to Phanar and hence all to  things Greek and Turkish.
        So. You remain a church for immigrants and all concerns ‘ over there’   with a nod to the punters to keep them on board.
      After viewing this video, I can actually say I am totally disgusted. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought this luncheon had taken place in Greece!
      Someone should have the common sense at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America to know proper protocol. What a shame to be in this great country of ours and to not know our US National Anthem is to be sung first. What a shame and how embarrassing. The Archdiocese should be ashamed of themselves!
      • George Michalopulos says
        Indeed. It’s called divided loyalties. And it ensures that evangelism is a dead letter.
      • Michael Bauman says
        GS, we are just the barbarians good for nothing except the provision of our master’s larder.  That is always the way the institutional Greek Church has come across to me.
      • George,  Michael. HOW MANY STUFFED LUNCHES ARE WE MEANT TO ENDURE???
        Perhaps they never read the verses from  ST Luke about such events and the high ways and byways?.
        Guys the joke is that the greek state is secular and currently atheist and I do not see that changing as the secular level of Greece grows apace.  So they do not care a toss that the Church consider itself to be a surrogate for the State. They do not recognise it.
        Yes last time I checked NY is USA.  I did wonder seeing the greek flag outside greek churches.  There should be NO FLAGS, outside any church.
      You know, I was educated in the public school system here in the United States
      Who knew the United States was so passionate about Orthodox theology!
      I never caught that in school
      It was all secular humanism, atheism and godless natural evolution along with modernist subjective moral ethics
      In fact, if you had any traditional moral convictions, and especially if you were an outspoken Christian, you were promptly slapped down and ridiculed
      My, things have changed
      How encouraging
      The United States government loves Jesus!
      They even supported the Church of Constantinople in issuing the Ukraine a Tomos of Autoselfie!
      Take that, you Rooskie d-bags!
          • Now that Elpidophoros is in the US, it looks like he is throwing down the gauntlet again via The National Herald.
            It looks like his first move to unite the Greek Orthodox in the US is to stoke the fire of anti-MP-ROCOR hate with some of  that “Anyone who ain’t with the Greeks are either Russian spies or victims of Soviet propaganda” mixed with “Moscow is attempting to displace the Ecumenical Patriarch (read: Greeks) to become Third Rome (read: Slavs over Greeks).”
    Geoffrey Pyatt: An historic day for the strong relationship between Greece and America
    • So people of greek origin in USA forth generation, are still considered as FOBs.   What a load of cobblers as the brits say.  A load of pretend nothing
      • Retas Tidaflis says
        Foreshadowing Eric Metaxas, Alinsky’s Rules wrote: “If I approached them in a moralistic way, it would be outside their experience because Christianity and Judaeo-Christianity are outside of the experience of organized religion. They would just listen to me and very sympathetically tell me how noble I was. And the moment I walked out they’d call their secretaries in and say, ‘If that screwball ever shows up again, tell him I’m out.'”
        • You have it in one. grandeliquant speeches, presses all the modern buttons, they know in full.  But what are they but pretend players perpetuating a power structure of a dead empire, and dressing it with God.. IN 2019!!  my friends!!   THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES.  Knows it and trying to get dressed with you guys paying for it all.
          And over all the claim that Phanar has power ‘ sui generis’ .  Well grant the Roman one thing,  at least in the Gospels, Christ had a chat with Peter about one or two things!!
    • So  Saturday was a lovely bun fight in Holy Trinity. Proud  greek mum I’m sure, of son did well, and warm words.
      Well let’s give them one, from the photos I can’t complain about the beards!! ?
      But I’m interested in more than a beard photo op.
      And let’s give him credit and be hopefull?   But after the ticker tap been cleaned up, we know the brief he came with. It’s Papal., Hellenism for the Church and turning the Phanar into the Vatican and some,  with property and wealth dotted across the world as an international globalised religious organization .  And let’s see how the money flow now for this.  Does any body else find the amount of money involved in the St Nicholas project,  let alone the smell of corruption around it, quite sickening?
      • Greatly Saddened says
        Yes, indeed I do. Spending some 80 million dollars on basically a visitors center is rather hard to believe. Especially when that money could be better spent helping the homeless, the poor, the youth and seniors.
        • Unless they have plans to make other profits from this “investment”, like e.g.
          -let rooms and hall to other Religions
          -run some kind of “museum” for profit, remember the Vatican has such a museum under the church which exhibit among other things Mummies from Egypt! After all the young Eastern Vatican must learn all the tricks from the old/experienced West.
          BTW, does anybody know
          when were the GOA people officially asked whether they agree with such a huge “investment”?
    Metropolitan Tikhon guest of Ecumenical Patriarchate at annual pilgrimage to Cappadocia
      Greatly Saddened
      Huge news item that you posted:
      “Metropolitan Tikhon [OCA] guest of Ecumenical Patriarchate at annual pilgrimage to Cappadocia”
      Metropolitan Tikhon gave an address (being a guest in Cappadocia with EP Bartholomew present – and he is visiting the Ecumenical Patriarchate as well)
      In it he says:
      I come from America,  the land of freedom, the land of abundance, the land of hope . . . [briefly describes unity problem in America and EU process/attempts, and the need for a unified witness] in imitation of the great saints that we celebrate today and in fulfillment of the exhortation made by Your All Holiness [EP Bartholomew], that we all need “to move beyond what is mine and yours, to what is ours.”
      It was obvious that the EP’s next move was to get the OCA on board
      This is a huge, huge betrayal to not just the American Church, but the Orthodox Church worldwide
      Met Tikhon is not standing by the canonical Church of the Ukraine by doing this, and as predicted, the OCA is going EP
      That whole moving beyond mine and yours to ours is propaganda and it indicates exactly where the OCA is at and telegraphs exactly where it is going – very soon to be sure!
      Between the GOA and OCA combined – what is that – 75% + of Orthodox members in America?
      The OCA is the true battleground for all this for America
      I hope the OCA members make a stand against this.
      Their autocephaly is about to become another EP autoselfie
      This is bad – for everyone
      • Gail Sheppard says
        If what you’re saying is true (and I can see where you’re going with this), Moscow would sure be PO. Do you they would risk that?
      • M. Stankovich says
        I immediately presume that someone who posts as “anonymous” is neither in the Federal Witness Protection Program, nor are really serious about preserving safety. In fact, I presume people do so to disconnect the association between themselves and the absurd things they post online. Your post is a proof of concept.
        Seriously, are you even aware of the actual number of members in the OCA? Back in the day, the apocryphal story is that someone at UPI or the AP asked Fr. John Meyendorff the number of members in the OCA, and he is reported to have said, “Roughly, one million.” Whether this is actually true about Fr. John is insignificant, but for years, any media coverage of the OCA in the mainstream press always noted the “one million member OCA.” The truth? Probably short of 400,000 ever, and for the recent past, probably struggling to maintain 300,000. Without the OCA, “75% + of Orthodox members in America” would actually be 74%+ GOA.
        Secondly, what exactly is attractive about the OCA to the Greeks?  They are notoriously poor, they notoriously lack candidates for the episcopate, and their members-to-scandal ratio is too high. And to be frank, the Greeks so decimated the Autocephaly by ignoring it – even to the point of denying its very existence, not simply as autocephalous, but as a legitimate jurisdiction – and the Russians did absolutely nothing to support the autocephaly they “granted.” Further, a strong faction within the OCA that was/is hindering growth by ethnic “devotions” – exactly as the Greeks – that stifle any spirit of outreach & evangelization.
        This news is “huge?” Right. The OCA has clearly abandoned any idea of bringing a truly American vision of Orthodoxy, as they were intended. It seems to be settled into a “peripheral” existence, and honestly, it may be a higher calling to be faithful over ἐπὶ ὀλίγα – little/a few things (cf. Matt. 25:23) – and remain a “refuge,” rather than submitting to the disaster that is the GOA. Moscow PO’d? It would be like paying off the mortgage. They have ROCOR.
        • George Michalopulos says
          You bring up some good points. However you over estimate the “scandal” quotient re OCA bishops vis-a-vis the GOA. In the spirit of charity, I will not talk about the particular scandal in question only to say that the Phanar can give the OCA a run for its money in this regard.
            Michael Stankovich
            Whatever great mind you possess, you are a poor strategist
            The OCA is canonical and a major factor
            Whatever the actual numbers may be, the OCA is the second largest jurisdiction in America after the GOA
            They are also the most vulnerable/open to EP absorption
            ROCOR they couldnt touch if they tried, so they will be demonized
            Antioch and Serbia will be marginalized
            The remaining groups will simply be ignored and it wont be hard – they already are.
            As far as the OCA is concerned, It’s the name, legacy and any autocephaly or any further attempted autocephaly (ala Ligonier) outside the control of Constantinople is what they are after
            The supposed “Kiev Patriarchate” was just a simple “who cares” minority group that wasnt even canonical by any means
            Look how much damage has been done by it
            And what, you want to downplay the obvious looming and/or in motion power grab of a historic local Church that carrys the legacy from which a saint that you’ve been defending hails from?
            If the OCA is as weak and insignificant as you say it is, then all the more reason for it to be assimilated by the politicking bait and switch tactics of Constantinople that seeks after groups needing/wanting full recognition regardless of their current legitimacy or lack thereof
            Constantinople had become a shark in the waters of Orthodoxy and it smells the wounded blood of the OCA
            Also, it would demonstrate the greater claim of Constantinople (by practice) over Russia (whatever they have been a part of or will do in the future) anywhere in the world
            There are powers at play that want to insure that
            Because that’s the unfortunate game they are playing
            I’m not saying we should play along either way.  I’m saying we are long overdue for separation from all these powers no matter what their interests are
            Such games are a trap
            The OCA is sniffing the cheese
            • M. Stankovich says
              Thankfully, I do not work at thinking strategically in regard to the church in America. If I’m wrong, I’ll own it, but you hardly offer anything beyond “The Boy Scout Mysteries.”
              What possible benefit could there be for the OCA to relinquish its “self-rule” (the sine qua non of “autocephaly”) and its recognition as a “canonical” jurisdiction everywhere except CPLE, except for a monumental Neo-Freudian Folie à Deux, where the OCA collectively whispers, “I always knew it. Pappi does love me!” And I reiterate my original point, what possible benefit could there be for the GOA in “assimilating” the OCA, other than having back-up singers who can actually pronounce a “B” for when they sing, “Why Can’t We BE Friends?”
              Secondly, as one who literally grew up in the palpably authentic zeal for a singular autocephalous church that were Frs. Alexander Schmemann & John Meyendorff – whose spirits were literally driven by the dream of an uniquely American Orthodox Church – I can tell you that such a spirit no longer exists. It is only by assuming a cynical, defeated attitude that I even see “strategy” as a legitimate option.
              I don’t know about you, but I’ve carried on similar discussions with several members of the OCA’s Synod, and I do not sense there is an active “need” – or in fact a desire – to be “legitimized” by the Greek Orthodox Church, particularly as it implodes.
              While I may refer to the OCA as “marginalized” in the scheme of world Orthodoxy, I am certainly not suggesting that the hierarchs of the OCA are incompetent, stupid, or naive. Simply consider what Freud would have said: “Sometimes an invitation to Cappodocia is because no one else would accept the offer.”
              Unless you have something substantial, I will assume that yours is wild speculation.
              Greatly Saddened, I apologize for a continuing discussion in your thread.
              • anonymous says
                M. Stankovich
                You misunderstand
                I’m not speaking of you trying to strategize
                Or the value of such strategizing
                I am talking about the ability to recognize the plans and strategies of Constantinople
                You think this is just wild speculation?
                I’m basing it off of Metropolitan Tikhon parroting the words of EP Bartholomew at this event:
                We all need “to move move beyond what is mine and yours, to what is ours.”
                Do you think those are hollow words or mere pleasant talk?
                Met Tikhon is signaling compliance to the plans of Constantinople
                The Church who just so happened to install the very heirarch who demands that all submit to the Mother Church [meaning Constantinople]
                Archbishop Elipidophoros wasn’t referring to mainly the GOA when he said that.  Why would he be?  He was referring mainly to all jurisdictions outside the GOA.
                This archbishop was just enthroned with all sorts of fanfare, including a representative for the U.S. President
                No one from the GOA even attended the enthronement of Met Tikhon
                I doubt they could have got the president of the Rick Ashley fan club
                He’s not leading things.  How could he?  All the teeth of his office were pulled before he got there.  Sorry, but clearly he’s along for the ride whether he likes it or not
                Who’s driving?
                Constantinople.  Not even Syosset. Not in the big picture
                I never said Syosset would be the architects of said strategy
                But have they already laid some important ground work?
                George seemed to think so a while back:
                Is Syosset Selling the OCA Down the (Bosporus) River? — Monomakhos
                https://www.monomakhos.com/is-jillions-selling-the-oca-down-the-bosporus-river/
                Look – look around
                Crete
                The Ukraine
                Redefining “Autocephaly”
                Removal of Archbishops in both the GOA and OCA
                Installation of new archbishops around the world almost simultaneously
                Mother Church
                I can go on and on
                These aren’t isolated.  Look at the picture as a whole
                You are right that the fire of autocephaly (as we know it to be by true definition) has gone out of the missional vision of the OCA
                What will fill the void and provide vision where it is desperately lacking?
                Antioch has enclosed itself.  On top of that, it is in danger of losing it’s infused evangelical fervor
                ROCOR has always been aloof (who can blame them, really?)
                You have goofy talk between the OCA and Constantinople
                Why would they continue to desperately hold on to an autocephaly that is either unacknowledged or simply winked at when that ship continues to take on water?
                You dont think they wouldnt fall for a United American autocephaly (which they have stated they would upgrade to, but not relinquish altogether) which is a false pretense?
                Sorry, but I do think so.  I have no problem being proven wrong in this!  I just don’t think I am given the data
                Russia didnt back out of Crete stating the OCA wasnt invited
                What’s the report?  4 out of 14 Churches didnt attend.  Not 5 out of 15.  Sadly, no one truly stood up and argued that point
                Who is to gain?  What do they really have to lose if the vision is already dead and buried?
                They’ve wasted all the money on Russia’s autocephaly gift card with no real investment.
                But here comes Constantinople to give them a different one
                Is the OCA autocephalous?
                On paper.
                That paper would mean something, maybe everything if the leaders weren’t quoting EP Bartholomew’s written lines like hired stage actors in his very bad play
                Looking at it all, I believe Constantinople is going to roll out some type of redefined autocephalous umbrella plan
                Maybe a hybrid of the Constantinople eparchy model mixed with a Ukrainian type of tomos
                It will be peppered with plenty of promises and glorious vision casting propaganda messages
                And will provide the proper motivation
                Until all is said and done
                And they [the Phanar] hold the ultimate power, with their choice bishops in place
                And a few people finding themselves on the outside looking in, realizing (whether deserved or not)
                That they’ve been snookered
                Or why is that duped (granted, deserved in his case) guy Filaret crying foul?
                Why is the canonical Church in the Ukraine under persecution?
                “What started in Russia will end in America”
                ?
                • M. Stankovich says
                  I chatted with two members of the Synod of Bishops of the OCA this evening. They both said you are pulling this whole “theory” – in so many words – out of your derrière. I didn’t bother reading the post above because it’s beyond dumb.
                  • George Michalopulos says
                    Well then was it Jonah being one of the first signatories of the Manhattan Declaration? Or his tremendous speech in Dallas in which he boldly declared the sovereignty of the OCA on these shores? Or was it perhaps the regrettable fact that when it came time to elect a new Metropolitan for the OCA all of the candidates were too old (Arb Dmitri of thrice-blessed memory) or too unqualified? And so they had to go for the rookie who had only been a bishop for all of eleven days?
                    In other words, was it just pure jealousy?
                    • Gail Sheppard says
                      It was the impact of Metropolitan Jonah’s speech in Dallas where he boldly declared the sovereignty of the OCA on these shores that rattled everyone, George. He had all of us, across jurisdictions, standing up and paying attention. They couldn’t risk having a real leader taking us in the opposite direction of where they wanted us to go.
                • George Michalopulos says
                  Brilliant analysis. In fact, I dare say, “spot on!”
                  However even the best-laid plans of mice and men are usually confounded. Was it Harold MacMillan (former PM of the UK) who said what he feared most? “Events, dear boy, events!”
                  Well, “events” are unfolding in Ukraine, but not to the Phanar’s plans. In fact, Bartholomew’s Ukrainian gambit has failed in spectacular fashion. Truly, it was failing before the recent elections but now that Poroshenko was slaughtered in the elections, then whatever good could be salvaged by the Ukrainian “autocephaly” has collapsed like a soufflé. Not only that, but Orthodox primates all over the world have been properly scandalized by his grossly uncanonical (and probably heretical) actions. Even primates from the Hellenosphere. Anyone who thinks that the CofGreece bishops are going to go along with the Phanar’s schemes without putting up a fight are dreaming. Up to now, they’ve been dragging their heels like a spoiled child being forced to go stand in the corner. At the end of the day Greece will probably cave but it won’t be pretty; instead there will be schisms within that church right and left.
                  As for the non-GOA bishops of the United States, I’m sure that there are a couple of sell-outs who will go along with LP’s plans. I’d say the few that will are probably in the OCA but I rather doubt it’s a done deal. ROCOR and the MP are permanently closed off. Serbia is rather ticked with the Phanar’s double game in Montenegro so I wouldn’t be holding my breath worrying about whether its American exarchate is going to swim the Bosporus. Ditto Bulgaria vis-à-vis the Macedonian brouhaha. As for the Romanian exarchate, well, let me just say that about 5 years ago, after the 5th(?) EAUSA meeting, it became obvious that the whole EAUSA thing was just a cover for Greek hegemony. It was around that time that more and more bishops stopped attending subsequent EAUSA meetings. Now things have gotten progressively worse. Georgia set up shop in the US much to Bartholomew’s ire. That wasn’t supposed to happen. My sources tell me that within the Palestinian/Jordanian Vicariate (which is under Istanbul) there is growing restiveness with the Phanar and its Greco-supremacism. If this grows, then the question would be where would they go? Antioch or Moscow?
                  In other words, we know what the Phanar’s plans are for the US, especially now with the new GOA archbishop in place, what we don’t know is whether they’re going to be executed as the Phanar wants. And I’ll tell you why: if the works and endeavors of any Orthodox bishop is based on heresy and/or will lead to schism, God has ways of confounding them. We have seen this throughout Christian history. The Carolingian takeover of the Western Church ultimately led to the Great Schism. It was Charlemagne’s insistence on the Filioque and then Pope Nicholas I’s demand that the priesthood be celibate that set in motion that unfortunate event. Same with the Council of Ferrara-Florence where it was the desire of the Eastern Emperor for the Church to become uniate. Not only did Moscow schism off (thank God!) but the Turks were given the divine authority to conquer the last vestiges of the Byzantine Empire and (unwittingly) restore the pre-Uniate Orthodox order.
                  For those liberal Orthodox who are putting their eggs in the NATO/EU basket, I’d say don’t count them till their hatched. Indeed, when it comes to initiating a new war of agresfor democracy, President Trump has so far confounded the neocon warmongers at every turn. My prediction is that the Ukrainian political situation will continue to unfold in ways not to the globalists’ desires.
              Anon, you make an interesting case here. For now, I just want to highlight the irony of the OCA “sniffing the cheese”. If memory serves, Met Jonah was taken out precisely because he asked the people if they wer willing to “reimagine autocephaly”. Not under Russia necessarily (although there was that) but under Istanbul.
              Oh, the irony!
              I will gladly accept the apologies of all my critics from way back when they took Jonah to task for “threatening” the autocephaly of the OCA. You know, in the interests of “accountability and transparency”. (Hint, hint.)
              • M. Stankovich says
                If you intend to stand behind your “operating memory” as accurate, allow me the opportunity to assist you.
                Your contention that Jonah was “taken out precisely because he asked the people if they were willing to “reimagine autocephaly,” is grossly inaccurate, and I suspect you know this already. Why do I suspect this? Because Jonah did not share his version of “autocephaly re-imagined” with anyone, particularly his colleagues in the OCA Synod of Bishops. This was the basis for their accusation of his attempting to make “unilateral” decisions. How do we know this is true? Because you published, on this very site, proof in the form of an independent interview with Fr. George Roschin, a priest at St. Nicholas Cathedral in NYC, representing the Moscow Patriarchate in the United States of America (a situation, I might add, whereby the Russians subvert the very Tomos of Autocephaly they granted). Unless you can demonstrate this to be a “rogue” undertaking of a single priest of the ROC, done with out the knowledge or consent of the ROC (and didn’t hear of his immediate transfer to Siberia), let’s examine what he said:
                “As an example, recall the episode in October 2008 . Then Bishop Hilarion of Vienna (now Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate ) was considered as a possible candidate to the chair [of] the widowed Orthodox Church in America. One of the statements, for example, said: “Bishop Hilarion would be a perfect candidate … If Moscow will let him administer us, what can be better to strengthen the links between the different Russian churches and even different jurisdictions in America? ‘.
                One of the signed petitions [I believe he meant “signers” of the petition] in support of the candidacy of Bishop Hilarion was recently the ordained Bishop Jonah (Paffhausen) , in the end he became Metropolitan of All America and Canada. [emphasis mine]
                “Later, Metropolitan Jonah offered to change the canonical status of the Orthodox Church in America, [from] autocephalous to autonomous within the Russian Orthodox Church. This tendency, along with a certain authoritarian decision was one of the reasons for the resignation [departure] of the primate on 7 July 2012 at the request of the members of the Synod of the OCA . As Archpriest Leonid Kishkovsky said in a comment to “Neskuchny Sad (Garden},” : ” It did not correspond to the self-dentity of the majority of our faithful , many of whom do not have any relation to the Russian community — who are Romanians , Albanians or converts from Protestant denominations .” [emphasis mine]
                So, not only does Fr. Roschin verify that Jonah acted unilaterally in his offer to “re-imagine” – a scenario where he would be the “Primate,” despite the senior and significantly more experienced Met. Hilarion of ROCOR – but he made it a practice. Then, he specifically refers the reader to an interview of Fr. Leonid Kishkovsky who, while expressing the shock & consternation of the Holy Synod at his unilateral activity, emphatically states what he consistently has always maintained:
                “The majority of the members of the OCA are not Russian, nor do they wish to somehow become Russian.”
                Finally, you have accepted wild speculation as the basis for your misinformation. “Anonymous” has presented nothing but conjecture about Met. Tikhon’s visit to Cappadocia. In the interest of “accountability and transparency” (Hint, hint), you are not reporting news, rather you are creating it, and with the weakest substantiation possible. That, in my estimation, is irresponsible.
                  This is beyond disingenuous. I won’t say “stupid” because you certainly aren’t. But your answer falls somewhere between disingenuous and deceitful. Sorry.
                  For one thing, the whole “unilateral” thing was WAY overblown and everybody pretty much knows it. And hypocritical: every other bishop in the OCA did things within his own diocese “unilaterally” and you should known this. I’m not going to rehash them verbatim but I will say that one actually went into another diocese (which was vacant and of which he was locum tenens) and actually did a political add for some billionaire environmentalist. It was a cudgel to beat Jonah over the head with because they didn’t like his Russophilia.
                  As far as whether he told his colleagues on the Holy Synod I don’t know. I do know that he mentioned this option to several hundred laymen at Atlanta during a Diocesan Conference there and it was met with thunderous applause. Just as then-Metropolitan Theodosius received some ten-fifteen years earlier in the heady, Ligonier days. If memory serves, Theodosius actually said that he’d take off his white klobuk (the symbol of the OCA’s autocephaly) and place it on then-Archbishop Iakovos’ head if that’s what it took to have a united autocephalous Church here in America. I don’t remember the Holy Synod stabbing him in the back over that one.
                  Regardless, you are inadvertently making my point in your fifth paragraph, specifically that the animosity against Jonah was because he was willing to take us from autocephaly to autonomy under Moscow. OK, I’ll play along: the loss of autocephaly is a bad thing according to this critique. Then why in God’s holy name are there high-placed actors within the OCA which are perfectly willing to place us under Istanbul? The most moribund, hidebound and ethno-supremacist of all the patriarchates?
                  That doesn’t make sense. It’s either “autocephaly now and forever” or “we want autocephaly but we’ll accept autonomy under Istanbul (but not Moscow)”. You can’t have it both ways.
                  • M. Stankovich says
                    Mr. Michalopulos,
                    Had I been the author of anything I presented above, I would consider it “fair game.” I was not the author, but merely the one who 1) presented – verbatim – pertinent comments of an independent source (in as much as the ROC can be considered “aloof” to Orthodoxy in America) that 2) you chose to publish on this site. You had no cause whatsoever to refer to me as “somewhere between disingenuous and deceitful” for offering it. If I am not mistaken, someone (Gail?) recently pointed out that the internet allows one to go back and read historical comments as often as one wished. If you now have misgivings as to the service of your memory, get a referral to neurology. As to your unjustified anger towards me, I would suggest your quarrel is with the ROC. The main number of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA is (973) 726-4229 or (Holy Cow!) reach the Chancellor at chancellor@mospatusa.com
                    Mr. Michalopulos, left me clarify why I even responded to your comment in the first place. As I’ve always said, I knew Met. Jonah when he was just “Jim,” and always found him to be a nice fellow. Everything beyond that is simply subjective observation, subject to bias. I might suggest that, when you have literally stood several arms-lengths away from Alexander Schmemann when he preached or spoke of his vision of a vibrant, living, and evangelizing autocephalous Orthodox Church in America, with all due respect, the “Speech in Dallas” isn’t quite as impressive. Regardless, I have no reason to deride Met. Jonah, nor to praise him.
                    I responded to you because, not only did you mock others who do not share your subjective opinion, but you asked for their apology for not agreeing with you. I happened to know what I know, otherwise, I suspect most people would be totally unaware of the legitimate, contemporaneous interview with Fr. George Roschin. Is that not deceptive?
                    I end by saying I continue to object to your unfailing attempts to suggest equality of “qualitative” moral justification. As you indicated reading Aristotle, I would suggest to you The Nicomachean Ethics (Ἠθικὰ Νικομάχεια): when something is unethical/immoral pursuant to Natural Law (or the Ten Commandments, for that matter), it is always unethical/immoral, regardless of who might be the perpetrator, or the circumstances of the unethical/immoral behaviour. Likewise, to suggest that, just because Theodosius did it and the Holy Synod didn’t “stab him in the back,” it was unjust, unfair, or unjustified for Jonah to experience the consequences of his actions violates the fundamental principle of ethics: “I am responsible.” From my vantage, men do get away with murder for many reasons – some for the most minuscule technical detail of the law. We will frequently hear some insist that this is “proof the system worked.” Nevertheless, no one would say they are “innocent from wrong doing.” When something is unethical/immoral pursuant to Natural Law (or the Ten Commandments, for that matter), it is always unethical/immoral, regardless of who might be the perpetrator, or the circumstances of the unethical/immoral behaviour.
                    • George Michalopulos says
                      I’m afraid we’re going to have to agree to disagree. The speech in Dallas was fantastic. And prophetic.
                      Consider his broadside against Bartholomew: “If we wanted to be under a pope we’d be under the real one.”
                      And that’s where many of us are now. We here in the US are going to be the first test-case. Will we allow Lambrianides’ startling eccesiological musings to stand?
                      Dr. Stankovich,
                      I said I wasn’t going to post on this forum anymore, but I have to agree with you. In my personal opinion, I think it is fundamentally unfair of to accuse you of being disingenuous. If anyone on this forum, calls them as he sees them without any ulterior motives, it is you. As fine a man as George is , in this instance, he is way off base. Perhaps, he may consider apologizing. Free speech means a divergence of opinions. Please carry on sir; you are one of the main attractions to this forum. Thank you. I still plan on adhering to my resolution of not posting on this forum, but I felt this disparagement of you was wholely uncalled for. To be honest with you, Doc, I didn’t know how refreshing you were until you were no longer posting. Monomakhos is greatly impoverished without your insightful commentary.
                    • M. Stankovich says
                      I appreciate your comment, Costa. I hate being the focus of any of this, because every time I am, I feel disheartened and discouraged. This is such a chaotic, frightening time for the Church in our society, when even quoting the words of our Lord and the Holy Fathers is described as “vicious attack.” Personally, I cannot reconcile myself to it. Again, thank you for your words.
                  George,
                  Being an honest man, I can admit when I am wrong. In this instance, I was wrong about freemasonry. I came across a book by a mason named Robert V. Lund. Perusing the book on Amazon, he makes some very dangerous connections between freemasonry and occult systems such as the Rosicrusians and Theosophy. Since there is such a thing as esoteric masonry, it is completely incompatible with Orthodox Christianity, and a Christian should avoid the lodge at all costs. There’s nothing in it for the Christian. I was wrong. Now, I could use some approbations for admitting I was wrong. May others follow my holy example. Outside of this news, I’m still not going to post anymore.
                  • George Michalopulos says
                    Costa, it took me a long time to admit I was wrong as well.
                    Having said that, Freemasons are some of the noblest, kindest, honorable men around. Of this there can be no doubt. The issue is not their upstanding morality but the nature of the theology itself. The same could be said about Haredi Jews. Fine people. Unfortunately what is said in the Talmud about Jesus and His mother is completely unacceptable and not salvific at all.
                  • Constantinos, welcome to what everyone else has been telling you for months, if not years.
                      Now that we’ve finally got here
                      If we could get everyone to understand that AHEPA [esoteric ethnic Greek secret society] is the same thing, that the GOA was essentially built by it
                      Why the GOA is thereby off track in so many of the essentials –
                      That the GOA (and therefore the Orthodox Church in the US) is pretty much under subjegation to it being lead by a group that is not compatible with the Church
                      That it provides the most likely reasonable and logical explanation behind such things as:
                      Why there is a powerful Greek lobby full of successful Greeks influencing and being influenced by politicians/the government with global implications
                      Why the Greeks are stating why they are the sole guarantors of the authentic Orthodox tradition worldwide
                      Why the Byzantine nostalgia and Greek triumphalism
                      Why modern ecumenicism is elevated while evangelism is squashed
                      Why all churches must submit to “The Mother Church”
                      Distorted autocephaly
                      Why so much of the secular humanism
                      Etc
                      Then we could all have a very Merry Christmas
                    • Never, EVER berate a man for coming around.  It’s not only bad form, it’s unChristian.  Costa humbly admitted he was wrong.  What more do you want?
    • Dan Lokatas says
      Dorian Greeks share Alpine ancestry with Bavarians. Minoans were Phoenician Arabs [Annals of Human Genetics (2008) 72,205–214]. They are distinuished as being Semites from Asia not Hamites from Africa. The Thracians or Vlachs were Carpathian Celts like the Galatians. Achaeans, Ahiya, were Hamitic Africans from Egypt. This is why Sparta got its wheat from Sicily which is closer to Africa than Europe and Peloporicans are the dumbest Greeks. Ionians, descended from Yovani, Javan, son of Japheth, were Scythians. The name Ashkhenazi derives from Scythian and David was a red-haired Scythian. This is why Athenians got their wheat from Scythia via Bezant. The Aeolians were Pelasgian Albanians. Everywhere Herodotus said there were Pelasgians, like in Koropi, outside of Athens, and Methana near Corinth, today there are Albanians. The Trojans were undeniably Hittites, who appear with Mongolian Turkic Turanian slanted eyes on drawings.
      • George Michalopulos says
        All over the place here, Dan. Some nuggets of wisdom or food for thought but some mistakes as well: Ashkenaz (the father of the Germanic peoples) was a son of Gomer, one of the sons of Japheth. Another of his sons was Javan (the father of the Greeks & Illyrians). The other sons were Gomer, Magog, Tiras, Meschech, Madai and Tubal (roughly the progenitors of the Celts, Slavs, Irano-Persians, and so on).
        According to the most recent genetic testing, the Cretans were related to the people of the Ionian Coast (i.e. Western Anatolia) and the Egyptians. Surprisingly, they did a genetic study on King Tut and found he had more DNA in common with the people of Great Britain than he did with modern day Egyptians. A lot more. This more or less proves that the Arabs genetically overwhelmed the ancient Egyptian population. You are correct about king David’s hair-coloring and complexion but that doesn’t necessarily mean Schythian ancestry although it does throw a kink into our conceived notions about what we believe about the population dynamics of ancient history.
        Consider: if you want to get Biblical, the “Hamitic hypothesis” contends that Ham (as well has his brothers Japheth and Shem) were white and that he was not the father of all African races but merely the Egyptians and the proto-Ethiopians (hence the European/Semitic physiognomy of the Ethiopians). This would nullify the Talmudic belief that the “curse of Ham” extends to the black African populations.
        Likewise it implies that the ancient Semites were themselves Caucasian who had intermarried with the local Middle Eastern populations at some later point in time (perhaps after the Babylonian Exile?) This would explain why the Jews (the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin) lost all knowledge of Hebrew. Was it because they were overwhelmed by Aramaic-speaking peoples? Or as Israel Finklelstein posits in his various books, that what became the Israelite nation was because of the congealing of several different tribes with little or no common ancestry over the course of several centuries. This would explain why the tribe of Levite had no territory, that they had suffered a military catastrophe which resulted in a state of semi-nomadism.
        This would imply however that the Flood was localized and did not destroy the aboriginal populations of Africa and Asia but that the descendants of the sons of Noah more or less conquered the rest of the known world. This is all very fascinating to be sure but it can validate racist theories about pre-Adamic civilizations as well. This would comport with the fossil record which has shown that archaic species of humans, including Neanderthal, Denisovan and Florenses (“hobbits”) existed at one time only to be largely wiped out by Cro-magnons.
        Anyway, I had a lot of time on the hands today so I decided to ramble. Forgive me.
    • Don Conlitas says
      Elps connection to Germany is curious. Mazower tells how the Jews of Thesalonike chose a German chief rabbi, thinking he was the highest kind. But when the nazis came, he proved way too gullible to their con jobs which cost the Jews dearly. Now, there is no proof the poor rabbi meant any harm, onlt that he was gullible.
    Without being rude or disrespectful. Since Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew decided to “divide and conquer” tbe former Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America. Mainly due to the fact he felt threatened by his Godmother’s brother, His Eminence of blessed memory, Archbishop Iakovos.
    And after the then bishops of ancient defunked Sees sold their souls to the Ecumenical Patriarch. They were elevated to the status of Metropolitans of their very own authentic Sees.
    From this point forward, rather than commemorating the Archbishop, they now commemorate the Ecumenical Patriarch. And in addition to this, they now answer directly to the Ecumenical Patriarch.
    Sad to say, but for all intent and purposes, the Archbishop since this change was made, is actually the ninth (9th) Metropolitan of his own Metropolis of which is called the Direct Archdiocesan District.
    I also believe the Archbishop needs to seek approval to enter another Metropolis by the Metropolitan of that Metropolis.
    Now keep in mind, things are a bit different with Archbishop Elpidophoros. Since he is the heir apparent to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
    The Metropolitans of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America must keep this in mind at all times! They must tow the line and be on their best behavior to not fall out of good graces with His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros.
    The byzantine intrigue continues and only time will tell for sure.
