Mike George Verges: Requiescat in Pace

Last night, my father-in-law, Mike George Verges fell asleep in the Lord after a long struggle with cancer. He was born on November 8th, 1926 in Houston, Texas, the youngest of eight children born to George and Aphrodite Verges, immigrants from Koroni, Messenia, Greece.

Like three of his older brothers, Mike answered his nation’s call after Pearl Harbor, serving in the United States Navy. Upon returning from active duty, and thanks to the GI Bill, he received a degree from the University of Houston in Architectural Design.

He married the former Mary Kleoudis in 1956 and Margaret, their only child, was born the following year.

Those are the rough contours of his life. There was more to my father-in-law than what one would find in an obituary. A devout Christian, he was a devoted adult Sunday School teacher for almost fifty years at his parish. He was certainly proud of his profession and he excelled in it but his avocation was the Church, to which he devoted most of his spare time. His knowledge of Scripture was as vast as his library and his travels took him to Israel to see first-hand the places where our Lord walked.

Now I am sure that this wonderful man, a true Christian gentleman in every sense of the word, is walking with his Lord.

In his honor I will observe a period of mourning for three days and refrain from any commentary or posting of news on Monomakhos. Thank you for understanding.

Margaret & George, how proud you must be to have such a wonderful father. No matter the age, losing a parent hurts. I came to the trisagion but had to leave before giving my condolences to your family (my Dad has Alzheimers). May his memory be eternal!
