Is This for Real?

So it looks like Joe Biden is the fourth U.S. president to be impeached by the House of Representatives, after Andrew Johnson in 1868, Bill Clinton in 1998, and Trump (twice!!).  –  The talking heads can’t bring themselves to report it this way, but that’s what it looks like to me.

If I’m reading this incorrectly, please let me know.

If true, it would mean Biden would be removed from office if subsequently convicted in a Senate impeachment trial.

In the House only a simple majority is needed to impeach. Such a vote might happen there, as it did concerning those earlier presidents.

But then the matter would move to the Senate and a two-thirds vote would be needed to actually convict and remove Biden With all the Democrats in the Senate now, I must deflate your fantasy George. Biden would be retained in office by a Senate vote, just like the others were.

This does not mean that going through the impeachment procedure would be a waster of time for the Republicans. It would provide a vote record that might embarrass a few Democrats in the House and Senate who represent marginal distracts.

    • It appears as though this has been written as a bill for an act would be written, i.e. in anticipation that the wording here will be used for the resolution if it clears the committees of the judiciary and homeland security and is sent to the whole House. I’m going to assume that those two committees will debate the issue and, perhaps, amend the language, blending it for presentation to a plenary session of the House. Debate will be fierce in both committees, but if it passes and the resolution hits the House floor, the fireworks will begin and most Americans will hear soundbites from it, as selected by the various newsrooms for targeted consumption.

As Mr. Sakelaris says, a simple majority vote in the House will send the resolution to the Senate for trial, where it will most likely die just as previous impeachments died. Even so, Mr. Biden will be on record as the latest in a recent line of presidents to be impeached.

Frankly, I think that the ostensible reason for Bill Clinton’s impeachment, i.e. lying about sex with Monica Lewinsky, was flimsy at best and set a distasteful precedent as we had been a republic for about 220 years and only Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln’s lackluster successor had been impeached before. Johnson was saved from removal from office by one vote in the Senate, as described in John F. Kennedy’s book, Profiles in Courage.

If you ask me, I would like the House to take a little more time and assemble a stronger list of crimes and misdemeanors to cast at this president, as his presidency has been a total disaster in every aspect. He has done his very best with the help of his handlers to dismantle our republic in every way he can.

Bribery by the Communist Party of China would be an obvious “whereas”. Another “whereas” might be his non-declaration of war on Russia, although that would be a stretch. Another one might be the mishandling of classified documents. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I would say take your time and build a comprehensive case against the traitor. On the other hand, once autumn comes, these politicians will be concerned about campaigns during a presidential election year, so maybe the time to drop the hammer is now.

      • By a vote of 219 to 208, the House referred two articles of impeachment [presumably to the Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees] — one for abuse of power and one for dereliction of duty.

I’m not sure it comes back to the House at this point. Does it? It’s shameful what I don’t know.

        • It was referred to the committees to slow it down it per McCarthy. But it is still in the House. He may have to let it go to a House vote though. This was Boebert’s resolution. She’s a bit more edgy than MTG and pushed it through. Greene’s got tabled early on.

Many feel they have a duty to do this. I tend to believe it’s a mistake unless you think you have the votes to remove. If not, it’s mainly theater.

          • Is it just me or did other people feel it was vastly inappropriate for MTG to talk about Boebert being “bitchy?” I was kind of shocked. Not because I don’t believe her but because it was weirdly inappropriate to say something like that about someone you have to work with. What does she expect when she goes into the belly of the beast we call politics?

            • MTG is aggravated because Boebert and Gaetz turned on McCarthy, whom she supported. It’s going to come back on her though. McCarthy is, at heart, an Establishment guy and it will show more and more over time.

        • Antiochene Son says

Bills generally are referred to a committee for debate and amendment before returning to the full House. He’s not impeached until that final vote.

      • “…most Americans will hear soundbites from it, as selected
by the various newsrooms for targeted consumption.”

        The emphases are mine.
