By way of explanation, GS collects and posts news items, cataloged by subject and a unique sequential number for later reference. This allows us to skim the news articles, by subject, in roughly chronological order. At some point, we hope to be able to offer our readers the ability to produce reports based on the system GS has established. Because so much is happening in our Orthodox world, we literally run out of room on these threads almost as soon as we create them which is reflective of just how much work GS has done on our behalf. I am being told we have run out of space again! Hence the need for “Ode to Greatly Saddened, Part V.”

BOSTON – The faculty of the Holy Cross School of Theology wrote a letter dated March 8, 2019 addressed to Archbishop Demetrios of America and to the chairman of the Board of Trustees in which it expressed its great concern regarding three ‘notations’ imposed on the School by The Board of Commissioners of the Association of Theological Schools Commission on Accrediting.
The professors wrote to the Archbishop “these three notations is of great concern to the faculty of Holy Cross.”
They are also asking for a financial audit: “The first steps to address this notation would be to conduct a transparent audit, by outside experts, of the structural budgetary operation of the institution. This audit should be shared with administration, faculty and staff as well as trustees. We also recommend the immediate recruitment of highly qualified past and new high impact board members, either to serve on the board of trustees, or even as part of a presidential financial advising committee to assist in the strategic planning process with the board.”

“A Letter of Concern from the Faculty of Holy Cross regarding the
Imposition of Notations by the Association of Theological Schools
Addressed to His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America,
Chairman of Hellenic College Holy Cross Board of Trustees
March 8, 2019
Your Eminence,
We greet you in the spirit of humility and forgiveness associated with the beginning of the Lenten season. It is with our deepest respect for your ministry to the Church of Christ and our acknowledgement of your love and concern for Holy Cross that we ask for your archepiscopal blessing and provide you with this letter.
The recent decision (February 7-8, 2019) by the Board of Commissioners of the ATS Commission on Accrediting to impose three notations is of great concern to the faculty of Holy Cross. The imposed notations highlight three significant areas of concern, namely, finances, governance and institutional planning. These decisions are based upon the comprehensive evaluation conducted by peers from ATS Schools who visited Holy Cross from November 12-15, 2018, for which Holy Cross produced a detailed self-study.
In response, the faculty has met several times (Nov. 20th, 2018; Dec. 11th, 2018, Jan 8th, 2019; Jan 29th, 2019; Feb. 26th, 2019), in regular and special faculty meetings, to discuss the November 2018 visit, and to carefully examine both the ATS Report of a Comprehensive Evaluation Visit for
Reaffirmation of Accreditation 11/12/18-11/15/18 (Visitation Report) and the decisions of the ATS Board of Commissioners (ATS Commission Letter) dated February 15, 2018.
Based on our understanding of the assessment and accreditation process, we recognize the seriousness of the three notations we have received as an institution (N1.b; N7.a; and N8.b). As a faculty we are committed, as Your Eminence is, to the success of the School and recognize that these ATS notations require immediate and comprehensive action. Per the ATS Report, failure to immediately and properly address these notations within the next 19 months (no later than November 1, 2020) will result in “an adverse action [i.e., withdrawal of accreditation]” (ATS Commission Letter, p. 3).
A Letter of Concern from the Faculty of Holy Cross March 8, 2019
We are alarmed because we do not see proper and appropriate steps being taken by the leadership of HCHC and the board of trustees to respond to these notations in a manner consistent with the expectations of ATS and best practices in higher education. We have yet to see the administration provide a plan of action to address these compliance issues and we are frustrated due to the lack of communication between the administration and faculty on common issues related to the ATS report. Further, we are disheartened in that Holy Cross had previously received a notation from ATS on insufficient institutional strategic planning processes in 2012 that ATS removed in 2014 only to have it reinstated in 2019. We are concerned that we do not repeat the very practices and mistakes that ATS has identified as insufficient and ineffective.
We understand that the current administration is under enormous pressures to attend to the immediate financial concerns of the School, also noted by ATS (ATS Commission Letter, p. 2, no. 7a). These immediate and urgent financial stresses have the potential to distract us from the important and urgent issues raised by ATS. Based on our years of work with ATS, we know that we can implement a comprehensive process of responding to the important issues raised by ATS. A proper response to the issues raised by ATS is the most effective means of addressing the immediate financial concerns of the School.
At this time, the faculty has put in place a process for responding to those aspects of the ATS Visitation Report and the ATS Commission Letter that fall directly under our responsibility. Specifically, we have taken the following actions in response to the Commission’s decisions regarding assessment of student learning and program assessment:
1. Adoption of a summative exercise to incorporate into the MTS program along with
review of MTS program goals and learning outcomes. Report on adoption of a MTS
summative exercise is due, October 1, 2019 (ATS Commission Letter, p. 2., no. 7.a).
Additionally, we will review program goals and learning outcomes for the ThM
program along with consideration of additional summative tools for the ThM. A
report on MTS and ThM program goals and leaning outcomes is due, April 1, 2020.
2. Establishment a committee to develop a timeline for faculty to address educational
assessment (Educational Standard, section ES.6) to complete the work of the Faculty
regarding learning outcomes, assessment tools, rubrics and benchmarks, and
evidence of assessment-based changes within each degree program (ATS
Commission Letter, p. 2, no. 7.c). Report due, April 1, 2020. Further, we intend to
procure the assistance of an assessment consultant who can provide clarity as to the
best practices and assist faculty in developing appropriate benchmarks and
measures for formative and summative student learning outcomes.
We acknowledge that the responsibility for addressing the imposed notations (N1.b; N7.a; and N8.b) falls upon all of us who are invested in the institution: the faculty, the administration, and A Letter of Concern from the Faculty of Holy Cross March 8, 2019
the board of trustees. ATS understands the process of responding to notations to be a collective response by the major stakeholders that must include the board of trustees. Below are some of our thoughts concerning the three notations issued by ATS and some of the parameters within which the School’s response ought to be undertaken.
Notation N1.b:“The Institution’s planning processes are insufficient or ineffective.”
In the Visitation Report, ATS identifies their expectations for proper strategic planning as well as their concerns about our insufficient and ineffective institutional planning processes.
“The Institution is encouraged to develop an institutional strategic plan including relevant, prioritized, and measurable goals that are linked with a long-term financial plan, and a revised system of ongoing institutional evaluation that will assist administration and board of trustees in the effective decision-making processes essential to the future success of the institution.” (Visitation Report, Section 1)
Further, the report indicates our intent to develop a 2019-2024 strategic plan which is “under consideration by the board of trustees who will appoint a steering committee as well as subcommittees responsible for new strategic initiatives and goal structures.” (Visitation Report, Section 1) We see little or no evidence that a strategic planning process has been initiated either by the president, the administration, or the board of trustees.
We, as a faculty, are alarmed because a process of developing a strategic plan should have been initiated in 2016. The previous 5-year plan was for 2013-2018, and a proper process for developing a new strategic plan requires an 18-24 month process of active involvement of the board of trustees, faculty, and administration through a deliberative process that reflects best practices.
Properly responding to this notation would consist of initiating a strategic planning process that reflects best practices, and engages the faculty, administration and the full board of trustees. This would require, initially, such things as the establishment of a genuine steering committee, in-depth conversations with the faculty regarding current and future academic programming, the hiring of a strategic planning consultant, the establishment of subcommittees, and the development of a time-table for a proper strategic plan.

Notation N7.a“The institution does not adequately or appropriately define, exercise, or implement the roles, responsibilities, and structures of authority and governance.”
ATS has demonstrated a respect for the unique relationship between the School and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. From our vantage point and that of the ATS Visitation Report, this notation indicates that we as an institution have failed to clearly define and adequately implement the roles of the board of trustees, the president, the deans and the faculty within the overall context of shared governance (see Section 7 of the Visitation Report).
ATS has expressed concerns, that “…the board may not be exercising its authority only as a group (Standard 7, section 7.3.1.8), and found inadequate evidence that the board has created and employed adequate structures for assessing the performance and accountability of chief administrative leadership (Standard 7, section 7.2.1.6)” (Visitation Report, Section 7). In Trust provides guidelines on how to effectively evaluate an institution’s chief executive officer (http://www.intrust.org/Portals/39/docs/presidential-evaluation.pdf). In addition, ATS noted their concern that the board of trustees did not exercise “adequate financial oversight” of the School (Visitation Report, Section 7).
The ATS evaluation committee recommended “the institution would benefit from a review of the operative structure of governance to ensure it is clear where the authority for maintaining the integrity and vitality of the school resides, and how that authority is exercised in actual practice” (Visitation Report, Section 7). We as a faculty welcome such a review and encourage that such a review would incorporate the review of the Faculty Handbook which Hellenic College and Holy Cross faculty began in Fall 2017. Further, we encourage the board of trustees to read carefully Section 7 of the Visitation Report.
Properly addressing these concerns would include such things as: an assessment of board membership to ensure adequate depth and expertise on the board to guide the work of the School; detailed reports informing the board on all aspects of the issues currently facing the institution (ATS notations, Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, NEASC/NECHE, etc.); and special meetings of the entire board to address the immediate and long-term issues facing the school (Bylaws of Hellenic College, Inc., 2014, Article 2, Section 10).
These initial steps related to the expansion, education, and engagement of the board represent significant and critical first steps in addressing all imposed notations. We fear that failure to implement even these basic steps is evidence of repeated poor practices.
Notation N8.b.“The institution’s financial resources are not adequate for long-term institutional viability and there is no credible plan to address this in a timely and effective manner.”
While the administration is taking action to address the short-term financial issues at this time there is no evidence of any steps toward long-term financial viability. ATS explicitly identified A Letter of Concern from the Faculty of Holy Cross March 8, 2019
the failure of the board regarding the long-term finances of the school: “Although the president has implemented austerity measures to bring expenditures in line with revenue, the team saw little evidence of board actions to address the long-term viability of the institution” (Visitation Report, Section 7). As Your Eminence is aware, this particular issue is not new. This was identified more than a year ago by former members of the board of trustee and reaffirmed by the ATS review committee.
The first steps to address this notation would be to conduct a transparent audit, by outside experts, of the structural budgetary operation of the institution. This audit should be shared with administration, faculty and staff as well as trustees. We also recommend the immediate recruitment of highly qualified past and new high impact board members, either to serve on the board of trustees, or even as part of a presidential financial advising committee to assist in the strategic planning process with the board. ATS expects that we would recruit, in addition to clergy with pastoral experience, experts from various fields, committed to the life and ministry of the Church and School, who possess expertise at taking vision and mission and laying out an operational plan to meet those goals (ATS Standard 8.2.3). These individuals would have expertise in, for example, finance, strategic planning, real estate, higher education, administration and operations.
Conclusion
ATS has indicated that they are keenly aware of our inadequate processes and our pattern of failing to engage in best practices, or take proper steps, specifically regarding strategic planning, governance, and finances. Any deviation from their expectations of real and appropriate action, at this point, will most likely result in the withdrawal of accreditation, independent of the shortterm efforts currently underway. These simple and basic first steps, at this time, represent the critical steps necessary to respond to ATS.
The faculty is prepared to participate in, and contribute to, an appropriate, open and transparent process of responding to the ATS notations. Time is of the essence. We would welcome a meeting with Your Eminence to discuss any of the issues we have identified.

He refuses to condemn his own priests who take a bloody political stand against the Ukrainian government. It would appear then that the blood is partly on his own hands.
Joseph, the present Maidan state is illegitimate. In fact, it’s positively pro-Nazi in its imagery and most definitely exclusionist in its practices and programs. That’s probably why HB Onuphriy won’t/can’t/shouldn’t condemn the separatist militias. What choice do those Ukrainians who speak Russian and/or don’t positively hate Russia have?
Yanukovich, for all his faults, was legally elected as President of Ukraine. Even a leftist partisan hack like James Carville flat-out said this.
George, even if we believe “the present Maidan state is illegitimate”, does the Church really have the right to make that call? Perhaps in some cases like when Greece proclaimed independence from the illegitimate Ottoman yoke, but the situation in Ukraine isn’t comparable. This is evident in the coming elections next week where pro-Russian sentiment is a minority held position of maybe ten percent of the populace. This is not an Ottoman yoke situation.
The ROC’s “Basis of the Social Concept” even gives us the example of St. Tikhon of Moscow who forbade his clergy from taking a political position against the Bolshevik government. St. Tikhon advised his clergy:
“by virtue of their rank should be above and outside any political interests. They should remember the canonical rules of the Holy Church whereby she prohibits her servants from interfering in the political life of the country, joining any political parties and, what is more, from making the liturgical rites a tool of political demonstrations.”

Unfortunately, St. Tikhon’s example appears to be contrasted by Metropolitan Onuphrey’s turning of a blind eye to the UOC-MP clergy’s support of the bloody pro-Russian separatist movement.
Joseph Lipper: even if we believe “the present Maidan state is illegitimate”, does the Church really have the right to make that call?
It is you who claims that the Church has duty to defend the legitimate government.
And this coup is not a matter of belief, it is an undeniable fact.
Of course the Church should stay away from the politics. And politics from the Church.
This news article suggests that pro-Russian sentiment is fifteen percent among elligible voters of Ukraine, excluding the “occupied” areas. Boyko still accounts for around ten percent, but other pro-Russian candidates apparently account for the remaining five percent. Even if those candidates somehow merged, there’s probably still not enough support to win. Pro-Russian sentiment still appears to be an overall minority position among the elligible voters of Ukraine.

So if pro-Russian separatists are frustrated by their minority position in Ukraine, does that then justify taking up arms against one’s country? Good. Did Christ wear a ring to be kissed? No. SO why a Pope or bishop? The stupid head dresses they wear, East and west, are bad enough.
At one time, the rings worn by RC bishops contained a tiny fragment of the Lord’s Cross, hence the custom, which was about venerating the relic, not the ring itself.
The rings no longer contain relics, but the practice endured.

Holy Synod concluded without any major decisions
Today’s session of the Church of Greece’s standing Holy Synod concluded without any major decisions, as the Church has now decisively signaled to the Greek government that it will not enter into dialogue or negotiations over the government’s intent to change the payroll regime for clerics in the country.
The Church’s hierarchs have also rejected the government’s so-called «take it or leave» proposal.
In another matter, the Holy Synod’s hierarchs also decided against taking a position, at this phase, over the contentious issue of the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s granting of autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The most probable outcome is a decision by the Greek Church’s Holy Synod to be taken in the autumn.
Deliberations on the issue, however, appear to be continuing. On Monday, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, received the Orthodox Metropolitan of France, His Eminence Emmanuel, and the Metropolitan of Adrianopolis, His Eminence Amphilochios.
Metropolitan Emmanuel is considered as the architect of the agreement whereby the Ecumenical Patriarchate granted the Tomos of autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church.

Bishop Ezekiel to serve as patriarchate’s commissioner to Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia
The Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Bishop of Dervis, His Grace Ezekiel, will serve as the Patriarchate’s commissioner to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, following the passing last week of Archbishop of Australia Stylianos.
His Grace Ezekiel had previously served as an auxiliary bishop to Stylianos.
The passing of the much beloved Archbishop of Australia rekindled discussions on the future of the Archdiocese, with the foremost issue being the selection of a successor, as well as the possibility of dividing the Archdiocese on the large island continent.
The Ecumenical Patriarch, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, expressed the Mother Church’s great interest in the welfare of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia in the days after the passing of Stylianos.

Statement of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on the current situation in Ukrainian and World Orthodoxy

The Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at its April 3, 2019 session discussed the prevailing situation Ukrainian church life as well as in world Orthodoxy that has eventuated following the anticanonical granting of the Tomos of Autocephaly for the newly created “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (“OCU”), and hereby declares the following:
1. We state that the idea of overcoming the church schism in Ukraine by the granting of a Tomos of autocephaly to the non-canonical church groups (“UOC-KP” and “UAOC”) has turned out to be a grave error. None of the Local Orthodox Churches has recognised this illegal act perpetrated by the Patriarchate of Constantinople and a large part of the Local Churches, notably, the: Antioch, Russian, Cypriot, Serbian, Polish, Albanian, and Orthodox Churches in the Czech lands and Slovakia, in various forms, have already expressed their disagreement with the decisions made by the Constantinople Patriarchate. Local Churches have also confirmed that they do not recognise the newly established “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (“OCU”) and regard the clerical Cheirotonia in this structure as illegitimate and prohibit its own clergy to have any prayerful contacts and liturgical concelebration with its representatives in any form whatsoever. Thus, there was no positive response nor indeed acceptance by world Orthodoxy of the actions perpetrated by the Patriarchate of Constantinople; which, in fact, has attempted to legalise the schism. Accordingly, the legalisation of the schism – is not the way in which church unity can be achieved. We remind you that according to the historical-canonical tradition of the Church, autocephaly is provided only to a single Church within a certain state, and not to any part that has broken off from the Body of the Church.
2. It must be admitted that the historical and canonical arguments presented by the Patriarchate of Constantinople regarding its own right and the possibility of interfering in the affairs of other Local Churches is totally unfounded, artificial, false, and contrary to the Church’s canons. Accordingly, the Patriarchate of Constantinople does not have any right whatsoever to interfere in the church life of Ukraine. The actions and arguments of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which illegally lifted the anathema from the chief culprit of the Ukrainian church schism, Filaret Denysenko and also recognised the hierarchy of the UAOC which does not have apostolic succession at all, testifies to the fact that the Phanar does not fully comprehend the true essence of what is happening in the Orthodox environment of Ukraine. In fact, Filaret Denysenko was not anathematised for seeking autocephaly, as stated by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, but for his immoral personal life, the grievous sinless instigation of a schism in the Church, the creation of a parallel schismatic hierarchy, and a quasi-church structure that, throughout its existence, has resisted and continues its struggle under another name against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and even now threatens to destroy the unity between the Local Orthodox Churches.
3. It should be noted that the actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Ukraine has caused great harm to Ukrainian Orthodoxy, and also became a threat to Pan-Orthodox unity. We believe that the Patriarchate of Constantinople and personally Patriarch Bartholomew must admit their mistake and start working on correcting it. A way of rectifying their mistake could be to rescind the granting of the Tomos, call for the schismatics to repent their sin of schism and convene a Pan-Orthodox Assembly in order to facilitate a conciliar decision which may help resolve the Ukrainian ecclesiastical question.
4. Ecclesiastic reality in Ukraine illustrates that for Orthodox Christians, the Tomos did not bring with it any unity, peace or respite as was promised by the initiators of this idea from church and state circles a year ago. Instead, the fruits of the Tomos became violence, conflict, confrontation, tears and suffering for the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). All these facts testify to the fact that the simple legalisation of schism does not change the schismatics themselves who remain hostile and aggressive to the Church. Only repentance and true recognition of their mistakes by the schismatics to the Church and their return unto the bosom of the Church can bring true peace and unity in the church life of Ukraine.
5. Coercive force, discrimination and violation of the rights of the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have already been noticed by international human rights organisations. In particular, this was reflected in the latest report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). These offenses, often supported by local authorities, compromise our country in the world. Violence, the forced seizure of our churches and other unlawful acts will not lead to church unity in Ukraine. This is a false path to take and one needs to have the courage to recognise this mistake. We respectfully request that representatives of the ruling authorities stop their artificial initiation of the change of jurisdiction of our parishes, since our clergy and parishioners do not have this internal desire. We believe that the campaign to discredit the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the prohibition of the presence of the clergy of our Church in the army, attempts to forcibly change the name of our Church and other similar anti-church actions is a strategic mistake of the authorities in the field of internal politics and stability in our country.
6. Of particular concern is the fact of the criminal prosecution of the cleric, Archpriest Viktor Zemlyanoy, of the Rivne Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. For the first time in Ukraine’s independence, a priest who protects the rights of believers and freedom of religion is unreasonably prosecuted and accused of incitement to religious hatred.
7. We ask the state authorities not to interfere in church affairs, and thereby not contribute to the incitement of religious hatred through their actions, and to also cancel the requirements of the Law of Ukraine No. 2673-VIII of 17.01.2019 on the compulsory renaming of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church; as being unconstitutional and contrary to the norms of Ukrainian and international law and basic principles of human rights and freedoms. We also appeal to the government not to facilitate forcible seizures of our Church parishes by illegal re-registration. The Lord gives rulers power not for the creation of discord in society, but for the cultivation of peace, tranquillity and harmony among all citizens of the country.
8. We appeal to the representatives of the newly formed structure – the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (“OCU”) with a request to remember the words of Christ that love for our neighbour is a sign of true Christians (see John 13:35). The more violence on your part towards our believers today, the more distant will be the prospect of restoring church unity in Ukraine. The fact that you seize our churches together with the involvement of political, state, and sometimes even paramilitary structures, expelling our church communities into the street, forcing them to pray in the open air or in non-adapted premises; we perceive with Christian patience. “We are reviled, and yet we bless: we are persecuted, and suffer it. We are evil spoken of, and we pray” (1 Cor. 4:12-13). In this patience we humbly pray and await the time when Christian love will overcome hatred, malice and hostility, and we will be able to meet you on the threshold of the Church and hug you as brothers and sisters who have returned home.
9. We express our gratitude to those Local Orthodox Churches, which have already supported the canonical ecclesiastical order and did not agree with the legalisation of the schism. We also thank those priests and believers who lost their churches that were seized, and still retained their loyalty to the Church. We call upon the clergy and the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to help and support the priests and communities whose churches were forcibly seized, bearing in mind the words of St. Paul: “Bear ye one another’s burden and so fulfill the Law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2).
10. During these salvific days of holy Great Lent, where we have already passed the half way point to the Holy and Bright Feast of the Resurrection of Christ. We ask everyone to pray that the Lord preserve the unity of Holy Orthodoxy, strengthen us to remain steadfast for the Truth of God, and grant us peace, transquillity and mutual understanding in our Ukrainian state. May our Lord God bless us all!

No one recognizes the CP has “special prerogatives” allowing him to meddle in other bishop’s territories nor do people agree that the “patriarchs outside the original five Patriarchates bear the title only through economia and the good pleasure of Constantinople.” I think the metropolitan may be repeating the party line knowing how stupid it sounds. This guy is not afraid to tell the truth. Right here he is offering a perfectly valid criticism of his own Church of Greece . There’s probably other bishops in Greece that want to clobber him right now. For that matter, there’s probably bishops all over the world that want to clobber him right now.
He knows a lot of his stuff. He’s a good guy no doubt. His reasoning however in this regard is incorrect. It’s even incorrect according tonthe CP’s own protocols for Crete.
One can’t have it both ways.
It boils down to this, does EP have papal like powers and if so why and how and when??
And IF it does, then we Orthodox are liars and dividers of Christ’s Church because we should be in obedience to Rome. So i rather THIBK the answer is NO IT DOES NOT

This article is interesting, but it misses one singularly important point, and that is that all calculations of the date of Paskha are in error insofar as they don’t follow the formula emplaced by the First Ecumenical Synod at Nikaia in A.D. 35: the Lord’s Resurrection is to be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring equinox. he article cites an ‘expert’ who says that the Synod’s formula is unknown, but this is a misstatement.
Another fact not mentioned here is that, while both eastern and western calculations fail to look out the window and observe the phases of the moon, they both assume that the Spring equinox always occurs on 21 March. This year, for example, it was on Gregorian 20 March. Add to that oddity the fact that the Julian calendar is now thirteen days behind the Gregorian, and will be fourteen days behind in 2101, and it can easily be seen how widely the dates of Paskha will vary in the future.
Some people have the idea that the Paskha must be observed later than the Jewish Passover (Pesakh) on whatever calendar they use, but they’re mistaken. After all, the Lord rose from the dead DURING Passover, not after it.
Anyway, I trust that this will be of interest to you and that you’ll share it with anyone else who’s wondering about the difference in dates.
The practice of celebrating Christ’s Paskha, His ‘passing over’ from death to life, on one calendar by the Orthodox and on another calendar by other Christians is explainable, but not excusable, since both calculations are wrong.
Here’s an essay which tells us how we got this way, with suggestions for fixing the problem. There are real issues separating the heterodox from the orthodox, but this is a practical place to start addressing those issues and make some progress. Please note the live link to the 1997 ‘Aleppo Statement’ in the next-to-last paragraph of this article.
That Statement — yet to be adopted by anyone — provides a realistic way for all Christians to return to the structure set in place by the First Ecumenical Synod in A.D. 325, and commemorate the Resurrection of Christ on the same date each year. God haste the day!

Dealing with the symptoms without dealing with the disease is an exercise in futility. The Orthodox Churches have a disease. This disease is spiritual in nature. The disease is based in the almost total disconnect between the theology and spirituality of the Orthodox Faith and its practice by most Orthodox laypeople and the parish communities of which they are affiliated. Jesus Christ, His person and His Gospel is at the center of the Orthodox Christian Faith and yet, (and this comment is based upon 24 years of experience serving in Antiochian and OCA parishes, as well as serving as a visiting priest in many communities of the GOA) the “faithful” have little personal commitment to Jesus Christ and have “sold out” to secularism and ethno-centrism. I was told that Fr. Alexander Schmemann made the comment that Orthodoxy was the right Faith with the wrong people. I believe he was referring to the fact that the Orthodox Faith is claimed by thousands upon thousands of men and women who are more interested in the ethnic identities then in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have also been told that Fr. Alexander also opined that Evangelicals had the Head (Jesus Christ) without the Body (the Church) while the Orthodox have the Body (the Church) without the Head (Jesus Christ). Now I certainly aware that this statement
is theologically problematic while at the same time expressing the “disease” of the Orthodox.
In the 24 years I have served as a priest I have been vilified by parish council member after parish council member for being “too religious”, “too spiritual”, “too fixated on the Bible”, “too fixated on the Fathers”. I have over those 24 years subjected to the disapproval of lay parish leaders because I emphasized the liturgical and “sacramental” life of the Church, because I encouraged the practice of Confession, or fasting during the Fast periods of the Church, for supporting the Church through the scriptural methods of tithing and proportional giving and outreach to the neighbors who live around the Church building. In these cases I have been reminded that “this Church is for OUR people” and “we are giving as much to the Church as we possibly can”
Likewise in my 24 years of serving as a priest I have served under five different bishops. Only two of those five bishops ever supported me in my ministry to bring spiritual renewal to the parishes I served. One of those bishops actually removed from the parish I served because of the above complaints against me. I write of these experiences only to against me. I write of these experiences only to support my assertion that a canonically unified Orthodox Church in North America is not some sort of magic bullet to solve many of the problems that George Matsoukas claims it will solve in his article. Canonical Jurisdictional unity will NOT solve the “disease” that the Orthodox Churches in North America suffer from at this time. The only cure for that “disease” is an overall SPIRITUAL RENEWAL of the Orthodox people, beginning with the Metropolitans, Archbishops and Bishops on down to the Priests, Deacons, the Laymen and Laywomen and the Youth and Children of our parish communities. This will only happen when we recognize the ROOT of the problem, admit our spiritual malaise and respond to Jesus Christ by uniting ourselves to HIM, take up our Cross and follow HIM, and receive a renewed Baptism of the Holy Spirit that we may live the Orthodox Christian Faith in truth and not just word.

The exceptions are convert or Russian NEW parishes and my experience of New Romanian Parish in Uk before I left for Bulgaria but the rest very much as you say.
Insular, petty and honestly they not wanting people to join, not even their own children. . As for the bishops, most, cowards not confronting the liturgical and moral aberrations.
And of course it’s often the big donors who display this behaviour. It turns the Church into a charicature of itself that puts a barrier between the would be believer and Christ. That the Church survives is the miracle we must hold on to. But as you say, unless the disease is confronted, the symptoms will worsen. Re USA. The fact that governance is weak because of ethnic divide etc, makes it worst.
Fr Alexander Schememn was so so ahead of his time in seeing where we headed. The secularization of the altar. God help us. Do we Orthodox always need a catastrophe to wake us up.???? Ancient patriarchates living in la la land mouthing platitudes for morons and pseudo humble language. They all need sweeping away.

Kalmoukos reports that Metropolitan Emmanuel reportedly informed Bartholomew that he is not interested in America. It must be becoming increasingly clear it won’t be “a walk in the park” to push their agenda here.
It was also reported that Bartholomew announced that they will elect the new Primates for the archdioceses of America, Great Britain, and Australia and are scheduled to meet from May 9 to May 11. Although, Kalmoukos ends this statement with the fact that Bartholomew “might change his decision, as he has often done recently.” This could mean Bartholomew is waffling and is losing confidence in his ability to implement his plans. Good! He meets with the State Department in July.
This is good news indeed. My guess is that Emmanuel didn’t want to be captain of the SS Titanic right before it hits the iceberg.
The bad news is that Pat Bartholomew will probably insert Elpidophorus Lambrianides (who he wants to keep in Istanbul so he can be his successor). In the end, it doesn’t really matter because the Phanariote agenda as carried out since Bartholomew’s ascension to the throne will come to naught. If nothing else, the continued slow-motion implosion of the GOA makes the Cpole-supremacist position untenable, at least in the “diaspora”.

With all due respect, dear Brothers in Christ, autocephaly is a mute point! The Orthodox Church(es) in America will never be “ready” for autocephaly until they actually start practicing Orthodoxy. By that I mean actually live the Orthodox Faith. The Orthodox Church in the United States is beset by ethno-phyletism which has led to many parishes being ethnic clubs and not “outposts” of the Kingdom of God in this world. True and genuine Orthodox unity will ONLY come if there is a groundswell of spiritual renewal among our bishops, our clergy and laity. Our leaders need to know Jesus Christ in a personal, experiential way that can only be given if they desire it and they humble themselves and present themselves as vessels of the Holy Spirit, and then declare that forcefully to the Laity from the amvon. When Jesus Christ truly is allowed to reign again as the Resurrected Lord over His Church and the bishops see themselves as his icons in the Church, then, and only then, will the Church in America be ready for autocephaly. Otherwise, any changes would simply be rearranging of furniture and no lasting change with any real spiritual benefit.

Christ is Risen!
It was a beautiful service, I was very touched as I recalled with my older brother Mark Archbishop Alypy asking me some years ago what my favorite icon in the cathedral he painted, I told him the Resurrection and there we were looking straight ahead at the large Voskresenie icon during the service. Vladyka reposed on Pascha he was so beautifully vested, we simply couldn’t hold back the tears of endearment for we love him so very much.
