In the meantime, things are getting hot and heavy in Ukraine and I’d like to offer my comments in the vlog below on two letters written by Archbishop Anastios of Albania to Patriarch Kirill of Russia regarding this controversy.
Long story short: His Holiness, Patriarch Bartholomew is playing with an exceedingly week hand. Worse, he continues to misplay this hand. Let us pray that he pulls back from the brink. More to follow.

Surely the Greek Priests and bishops in Greece and the U.S.A. etc. are aware of the historical reality you have mentioned, it used to be very ingrained and often expressed by them. Nevertheless with the embracing of ecumenical movements that history seems to have lost it’s significance to the modern minded enthusiast. In fact, when the aforementioned historical reality is brought up, the accusation of being a fundamentalist (along with other harsh invective ) are often hurled. Yet predictably via the Phanar, we are seeing the same sort of results that authentic fundamentalism produces, namely my way or the highway, you are being forced to do this for your own good, etc. That is not just limited to Ukraine, it is everywhere for the E.P. so it is good and important to keep him and all the suffering Greek Bishops and Priests in our prayers.

It seems referencing the word irony maybe apropos, some say those in the Phanar actually are cognizant of what they are doing.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Orthodox Church focused on evangelism instead of all this political chicanery? We hear more about the political machinations of the hierarchy than we do about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A church divided against itself cannot stand. If every committed Orthodox Christian would lead just one person to our Lord Jesus Christ and His holy Orthodox Church, we would be bursting at the seams, but then we would have the hierarchy to ruin everything.. Is it all about poisonous church politics or is it all about our Lord and Savior? If we clip the hierarchy’s wings, focus on repentance, and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we could change the world just like the disciples and Apostles once did two thousand years ago. The Orthodox church lead me to Christ…meaning the Christ of the Gospel after weeding through the political nonsense and unscriptural teachings of this church.
It seems that Patriarch Bartholomew is taking after his dear friend Pope Francis, who does precisely the same thing. Meek and mild until you disagree!
There is no “brink” to pull back from. This Church of the East has been applying in an ad hoc manner an ecclesiastical structure (called a “canonical” structure or “law”, though it is not “forensic” in the normal sense of law), agreed in and written for a Roman Empire, to the rise of nation states and national/ethnic “churches” for about a 1000 years now. The EP is doing nothing other than the norm, and for that matter so is the MP. These “crises”, conflicts, and so called ‘brinkmanship’ is the status quo and has been for quite some time.
These conflicts will continue on indefinitely short of a real ecumenical council that honestly and directly addresses the what, when, and how of Orthodox ecclesiology in the world as it has been for the last 1000 years and what appears to be the norm for the foreseeable future. Yet, how is a council called (and by whom – and who pays for it) when the Empire is long collapsed?
The inside game between various Patriarchates (today EP vs MP, yesterday Antioch vs. Jerusalem, the day before that “canonical” Orthodoxy vs. ROCOR vs. weakened “official” Russian church vs. underground church vs…..) is somewhat interesting, as a worldly matter necessary, and sure to generate much passion, but it is at the end the day all rather tedious and futile.
I did not even click on the video. Is the opinion of a so called “Patriarch of Albania”, a tiny church in a tiny nation that has long ago lost the battle against Islamization (just as the EP and the Empire did) truly worth anything at all? Does he have the Charisma, the spiritual authority to call and organize a real council?? Without even looking, I suspect it is just more pious complaint and support of the status quo, written with much apocalyptic sounding piety that condemns someone else while making the proclaimer appear righteous and humble. In other words, it is essentially hypocrisy of the Pharsitical type.

May I suggest you repost this in another thread as it deserves to be read & commented upon. Fr. Florovsky has an excellent commentary as to why we have not had a Great Council since 787. Unfortunately, it is within the context of another full essay of which I cannot recall, but I will look for it. This Pharisee agrees with your excellent observation.
You say much truth. But I feel I must stick up for Yanoulatos of Albania as a good man and bishop who has helped to Reserrection the Albanian church literally from the dead since the late 1980s. Some things worry me such as use of organ in worship in some areas etc but my point stands.
However you are correct that however elegantly put, he is stating the Constantinople party view in pious way.
If the Church does not sort out living in 21c reality it will become humanly speaking, a quaint cultic habit as Fr Alexander SCHMEMANN pointed out. I know he not the flavour of the the day here, but none the less true.

Dearest Brother in Christ and Co-celebrant,
“My soul is sorrowful.” A deep pain, worry and embarrassment engulf us too, as we follow the developments in the Ukraine issue, after the decisions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (11.10.2018) and of the Orthodox Church of Russia (15.10.2018), which You record in Your letter of the 29th of October 2018.
Unfortunately, they corroborate the fears we had expressed to the representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (30th of July 2018), namely that the currently planned granting of autocephaly to Ukraine will be a “march in a minefield” with painful repercussions for all.
At the same time, however, we ought to remark that the latest decision of the Church of Russia is also a source of great concern. It is unthinkable that the Divine Eucharist, the mystery par excellence of the infinite love and the utter humiliation of Christ, could be used as a weapon against another Church. Is it possible that the decision and order of the Hierarchy of the Church of Russia may cancel the energy of the Holy Spirit in the holy Orthodox churches that operate under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate? Is it possible that the Divine Eucharist performed in the Churches of Asia Minor, Crete, the
Holy Mountain, and elsewhere on earth, may now become unsubstantiated for the faithful Russian Orthodox? And if they come forth “with the fear of God, faith, and love” to partake of the Sacred Gifts, is it possible that they commit “a sin,” which they should confess?
We proclaim that it is impossible for us to agree to such decisions. It is imperative that the Holy Eucharist, this mystery of unfathomable sacredness and unique importance, remains far removed from all ecclesiastical disagreements.
However serious they may be, the accumulated questions of jurisdiction on no account may constitute a cause for a Schism of Orthodoxy, anywhere in the world. As we have repeatedly stressed, a possible SCHISM now, will tarnish the beauty of Orthodoxy, will weaken its international prestige, and will deeply hurt the faith of all Orthodox – especially those in the Ukraine, who are of immediate concern – who suffer continuous pressures from multiform atheism and are poisoned by indifference, spread around like radioactive dust.
It is, therefore, imperative to explore calmly a compromise, aiming at a deep and real pacification of the Orthodox faithful in Ukraine.
Regarding the Pan-Orthodox Synaxis that You mention in Your letter, we consider that the recent developments have made its convocation extremely difficult. The following questions remain crucial: Will the Orthodox Church of Russia ask the Ecumenical Patriarchate to convene a Pan-Orthodox Synaxis? What will be the criteria of a final decision in favour of peace and unity? The Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania is, in any case, willing to participate in a Pan-Orthodox Synaxis, which will be convoked canonically.
You know our repeatedly mentioned conviction that the most blessed achievements of Orthodoxy during recent decades were the Synaxes of the Primates of the Orthodox Autocephalous Churches. May we return to them, correcting the omissions and mistakes of the past.
The worry and embarrassment, which we initially formulated, are healed in a paracletic way by the psaltic verse: “Why are thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance and my God” (Psalm 42:11).

Thanks for posting this Beryl Wells Hamilton! It is in the main, the status quo in that it is a pious reflection on the “crises” of unity of the hour. For example, it laments the so called weaponization of the Holy Eucharist, yet even a cursory familiarity with the many crises of unity since the collapse of the Empire reveals that this is par for the course, even mundane. So when he says:
he is really uttering a *political* (which is to say at root a manipulative) utterance. The intended audience is supposed to understand both the real sacramental truth contained within it, as well as the “do as I say but not as the Church has actually done for a 100 years” hypocrisy.
Also, his “crucial” questions around a “Pan-Orthodox Synaxis” (tangent: the terminology is instructive: Not simply Orthodox or catholic/universal, but something safer for our modern dis-unity and de facto national church self-sufficiency, something called “Pan-Orthodox”) are themselves on the one hand mundane (i.e. they have been “crucial questions” since the collapse of the Empire) and on the other hand loaded in that behind them are the presuppositions of the EP’s particular “canonical” understanding of his role and authority in a modern (ecclesiastical) world. BUT (but but) these assumptions are exactly where the disagreement (with the MP, myself, etc.) and crucial open questions are to be found. In other words, †Anastasios is simply reiterating the EP’s position, understanding, and preferred path to a ‘solution’.
If †Anastasios wrote this letter innocently, really meaning it, expecting the MP to in some way be persuaded by it, well then he is profoundly naive – a “true believer”, a faithful soldier in the EP’s campaign (and he will soon be rewarded with a job at party headquarters). That’s not really the case however: this letter is not really meant for the MP, but for the media and the (churched) masses. This letter is propaganda
Where is the charismatic prophet and Patriarch of a real council, yet to be written cannon, and honest/believable (as opposed to anachronistic) ecclesiology of this Church of the East in the modern world?

So who is dividing the churched masses from leadership? From all of us, for that matter, against each other. So they may remain on the high.
Christopher’s entire post, most likely correct.
So if one is not a cynic, or does not read between the lines, one is a fool, that allows himself to be lied to, by not questioning the motives of our Church leaders. This is not healthy for anyone.
What a lovely Church we belong to.
It all depends on whether Moscow and Onuphry keep their heads and insist on the excommunication of the Planar. And given the choices they face, that is where the smart money is.
Replies to anything the CP addresses to the MP or UOCMP should be short and sweet. “We have nothing to discuss until your public repentance is offered and your excommunication is lifted. You stand in the same shoes as your new Ukrainian friends.”

No. Gail. I happen to notice the sequence of numbers at times seems to get out of order. So, when I do notice it, I make a correction with a reply to bring the sequence back in to its proper numerical order.

I can correct the problems for you GS, but I’m still confused. GOA42 is level above where you replied. Are you wanting me to correct the post you just replied to? In other words the one with the number GOA42 and nothing else? It won’t help to sequence anything because the system orders the posts by the date and time the post was approved. Unfortunately, they are not approved in the sequence they were submitted and the approver sees the latest pending post, first, and will work backward until all the pending remarks are approved for that sign-in session. – I’ll reorder the numbers for this thread and remove the placeholders. Hopefully, this will help.

I have this funny feeling that possibly some of my posts may be falling off the radar screen. This is just a huntch!
You mentioned this before, GS, and it concerns me. My staff says the only posts they’ve deleted are the ones where the number appears, e.g. UA47, E56, etc., and nothing else. They’ve also been deleting duplicate posts (this is for everybody), thinking the author posted the same thing twice by mistake. I’ve told them to start putting everything through until we get to the bottom of this. As I’ve said before, we’ve been having problems and are looking into it.
George … please, in no way did I mean this to be critical. I fully understand there have been problems. It’s just at times, the numbers for some reason or other, seem to get out of sequential numerical order. Wish I knew why!
I think I may have figured it out. By looking at the most recent GOA posts (i.e. GOA41 and GOA42), it seems that posts for a day, depending on the last time the website was updated can be delayed in posting and when I look back to assign a sequential number, there are still posts which have yet to be posted for that day. I try to wait at least one, if not more update cycles before adding additional posts. Please forgive me for the confusion.
FYI … just an observation. I have noticed lately when I sign on to “Monomakhos” the number of comments showing for example. “Ode to Greatly Saddened … Take Two” is for example is 91 comments and when I go in to “Ode to Greatly Saddened … Take Two” it shows 104 comments.
That could be because the approvers have approved new comments but the dashboard hasn’t caught up. There are a lot of moving parts and they don’t always move together. I think I fixed the numbering problem for you. GOA39 is now followed by GOA40, . . .41, . . .42, . . .43, & . . .44.

Maybe this decline should be the concern of every body on this blog. I do not know how wide it is and I hope there are many notable exceptions.
I believe we are coming to an end in the USA however, with degenerated ethnic parishes that are a pale imitation of the old world and irrelevant to the new.
By ethnic I do not mean any particular set of customs or food as why would these things be problematic? But I mean the continued use of a language as the main one of use that no one understanding and allied to an attitude of ‘ this is for there, not here’ and with concerns rooted elswhere.
Above all, because language not a panacea, look at the Catholic church, it’s an attitude where the Faith is a badge and not a living belief, where as I saw in Uk, the Parish president can be an Easter only attender, outside of the social events.
And we have to face facts that fasting and prostrations and spiritual discipline as opposed to pic and mix not in fashion in Trump’ s USA or Clinton ‘s. NOR WAS CHRIST REMEMBER. But running after the ‘ mood of the moment ‘ will only add contempt on to things.
There is no easy fix but a mentality that looks to the Church for entertaining, gas to change and maybe a simpler humbled church will come from this minus grand building and plays. Those who understanding know that those first liturgies in a HALL or western church with some icons added, were often the most meaningful. God bless.
Oh. Some spiritual unit would help but I am not even going there.. And return to ortho- praxis in worship.

“. . . Pitifully, among the initiators of today’s trials of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which argues for its right to interfere in our church affairs by asserting that our Church was once in its jurisdiction. In this connection, we would like to remind you that the Russian Orthodox Church had to declare its autocephaly because of the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s betrayal of the Orthodox faith by singing union with Rome at the Ferrara-Florence Council in 1439. This spiritual betrayal of the Orthodox faith became the principal reason for the Metropolis of Kiev, too, to separate itself from Constantinople. The unia caused a break in the church relations and distrust to aggravate later by the fact that for centuries the Church of Constantinople failed to provide appropriate pastoral care and help in the gravest times of trial for Orthodoxy in our lands. Exhausted by the religious confrontation with the Uniates, devastated by wars, especially after the 1596 Union of Brest, the Metropolis of Kiev joined the Russian Orthodox Church in the late 17th century with the aim to preserve the Orthodox faith. That is why today the Patriarchate of Constantinople has no moral and canonical rights to interfere in the internal affairs and spiritual life of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Moreover, the actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople have already led to the situation in which the possibility for unity of the Orthodox in Ukraine has been thrown away for long, if not forever. . .”

In my most humble opinion, Patriarch Bartholomew should finally do the right thing for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and for its faithful. The Patriarch should select and confirm His Eminence Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea as the next Archbishop of America.
First and foremost, His Eminence Metropolitan Ambrosios is “Christ Centered.” In addition, he is well educated both in Greece and here. As well as pastored in Greece and in the US. He has the education, the experience, is familiar with the workings of the archdiocese and along with God’s help, he will truly be a blessing to us all from above!
The time has come to finally put the “right” hierarch here to oversee the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s largest and most financially supportive eparchy in the proper hands!
