Is Our Society in Thrall to Demonic Forces?

I believe it was G K Chesterton who said “if a man stops believing in God, he doesn’t believe in nothing –he believes in anything”. That’s a pretty decent summation of our culture right about now.

Now, I’m not talking about the so-called New Atheists as I’ve always had my suspicions about them. You know, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris or the late Christopher Hitchens (who despite myself, I’ve always admired). They always struck me as constipated moralists and sanctimonious blue-stockings rather than as proper materialists per se. Like the Whigs of old they are sanctimonious without the sanctity. In other words, they are still in thrall to a transcendent moral code.

In fact, I have the sneaking suspicion that they actually believe in God despite their vociferous protestations to the contrary. Their beef against the Almighty is not that He doesn’t exist but that He’s not good enough for their tastes. You know the drill, He ordered the destruction of the Amelakites, told Abraham to sacrifice his only son, and then sent His own Son to die a horrible death on a cross outside the walls of Jerusalem. In addition, He sanctioned slavery, polygamy, the stoning of homosexuals, yada, yada, yada.

Good ole’ Yahweh just didn’t get with the progressive program. And we’ve progressed so much since then, haven’t we?

We’ll take up their moralistic beef against The Big Guy some other day. The illogic at the heart of their critique should be apparent but having said that, their materialism is still largely consistent. Note I used the word “largely”; in case you didn’t know, Darwinism can lead to some pretty uncomfortable white supremacist conclusions. (As it did for Darwin and every other evolutionist –even to this day, they just don’t talk about it openly.)

But as I said, that’s a story for another day.

No, the atheists I’m talking about are the right-thinkers and elitists who sit at the top of proper society. The Smart Set so to speak. People who have elegantly appointed salons in Georgetown and who give their blessing (such as it is) to those politicians who supplicate before them. People like George Will and Sally Quinn.

For the New Atheists, The Big Guy was an unreasoning and capricious sky-god who hurled thunderbolts hither and yon, thereby keeping the rubes in place. For the Smart Set on the other hand, He doesn’t know which fork to use. In the eyes of these sophisticates, that’s a far worse offense.

Well, it turns out that Sally Quinn (the second Mrs Benjamin Bradlee of The Washington Post Bradlees), previously a homewrecker and now the preemeninant Georgetown doyenne of DC society, was not really an atheist after all. Not in any meaningful (i.e. materialistic) sense. It seems that Mrs Bradlee has been America’s answer to Madame Helena Blavatsky all along.

Rod Dreher has recently outed la Quinn as an occultist of extraordinary talents. As you can read from the story below, she not only engages in astrology, Ouija boards and necromancy, but has even placed three deadly hexes on people who have crossed her over the years. (Take that! Sarah Palin!)

To me, this is nothing less than astonishing. Oh sure, I’ve read all the conspiratorial websites that have alleged that the New World Order people are Satanists (Luciferian is their preferred locution) who engage in all sorts of esoteric rituals but I’ve never put much stock in it. I chose to view things like Bohemian Grove as quasi-homoerotic hijinks which allowed really powerful men to let loose every now and then. Likewise the “spirit cooking” rites which gave irreligious A-listers like John Podesta the patina of spirituality. You know, it’s so much more outre than the actual Eucharist which lacks the jes ne sais quoi that sophisticates require to get through a busy day.

Now I’m not so sure. Maybe I was being naive or perhaps too charitable in my assessment of the elite and their antics. Maybe occultism is more than just atheism with a floor show.

If you think about it, it makes all sorts of sense. True atheism –that is to say materialism–can’t pursue a multi-generational agenda with any consistency. Besides, what’s the point? “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow ye shall die.” And lest we forget, the word cult is at the heart of the word culture. You can’t have the one without the other. Therefore, spiritual elements and belief in them are necessary for elites to engineer a society in ways that they deem best. And this includes rituals.

In late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, Christianity ordered society. But then came the “Enlightenment” and the “Age of Reason”. Supposedly, we’re in a post-Christian “secular” age and are still guided by the principles of rationality propounded by eminences like Voltaire and Adam Smith and Thomas Jefferson. But in reality we’re not. Because it’s now obvious that we don’t even live in a secular age. The more I think about people like Alistair Crowley, Blavatsky, Alfred Russel Wallace (the co-founder of Darwinism) and L Ron Hubbard, the more I doubt that we ever did.

These forces may be benign or malign depending on your point of view. But it is impossible to escape them. For Christian traditionalists this makes perfect sense: either you order a civilization along Christian lines or a demonic one will be take its place. There really are no alternatives. Secularism is nothing but the transition stage between one orthodoxy and another.

Now some will roll their eyes and think that Your’s Truly has gone off the deep end. OK, think it if it makes you feel better. If this makes you comfortable in your delusion that we still live in a secular age, then have at it by all means. But try and prove me wrong.

I’ll give you an easy out: we are presently going through a mass hysteria regarding the statues of Confederate generals. This is not unlike the Cultural Revolution which Mao Tse-tungunleashed on China. In Washington, DC, however there stands a statue of one Albert Pike, a former Confederate general right on Federal property. Pike in case you didn’t know was also the foremost occultist of his day.

Let’s see if all the right-thinkers are going to petition the Federal government to take it down. If not, let’s see if Antifa or BLM is going to vandalize it on their own as they’ve vandalized so many other statues. It’s located on D Street, between 3rd and 4th Streets, right at the foot of Capitol Hill.

I for one, am not holding my breath.

  1. George, it is “je ne sais quoi.”

  2. The Who’s, Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, and The Stones, Sympathy for the devil lyrics come to mind. Nothing new here. Different titles, societies, kings, queens. The left or right, makes no difference. At least twenty centuries of demonic forces running thru the souls of the so called elite of society. Makes no difference if it was the Christian age, or the enlighten age. Neither Christian skull cap or the atheist’s green hat with a red star, demons surround and influence. Outer appearances now, or the time of Christ on earth makes no difference. Demonic forces, their faithful, and fooled, have always been with us. Just not so blatantly manifest then, as today.

Side note: Albert Pike statue was the scene of a protest over 25 years ago , and even dressed up as a Klansman, with hood and gown, by LaRouche followers, and just recently vandalized with red paint. Imagine a scene where Luciferians, and Masonics, battle it out with the BLM, and Antifa folks attempting to bring down the statue. Talk about a demon infested scene!

Dino, I don’t disagree, but all things being equal, I’d rather live in a Christian-ordered society that is cognizant of creation and the reality that underlies it rather than the moral anarchy that obtains today. I mean, it’s bloody insane what goes on today.

      • George, when you put it that way, agreed. I must be getting too cynical in my old age.

        • George Michalopulos says

          You and me both, Kosta!

          • George, This just literally fell on my lap, and I thought it fits well with our topic of, The Demonic state we find ourselves living in:

“When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices withcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who call up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you.(DEUTERONOMY 18:9-12)

  3. Michael Bauman says

George, where do you think the Will to Power comes from?

  4. The logical conclusion of secular-humanism is occultism.. Fr. Seraphim Rose Orthodoxy and the religion of the future. I doubt Fr. Seraphim would find any flaw in your observations. It is needful to remind us, what the real problem is. Men are forgetting the Christian God. These will mindlessly accept the mark of the beast, serving themselves and living for bread alone.

  5. anti-occult book club says

You’ve been reading the wrong books, George. Michael Hoffman has been exposing this kind of stuff for years. His Secret Societies and Psychological Warfare and The Occult Renaissance Church of Rome are excellent exposes of the occult underpinnings of the elite. Do your library a favor and order his entire oeuvre.

If you want an exclusively Orthodox POV, look no further than contemporary writers James L. Kelley, Jay Dyer, and Fr. Spyridon Bailey, the latter of whom just published an excellent book about this subject.

    Occultism is everywhere.

    • George Michalopulos says

Indeed, particularly in the West, where mystery went out the door sometime after Charlemagne. I’ve studied the Renaissance Church in-depth and saw how Kabbalism crept into this vacuum.

    • Peter A. Papoutsis says

Orthodoxy and The Kingdom of Satan by Fr. Spyridon Bailey is selling on Amazon as both a physical book and kindle version. I just bought it and I am currently in Chapter 2. Excellent so far.

Please also catch his you tube video discussing his book.

      Great job George. Great article.

      • George Michalopulos says

Thank you Peter. And thanks for sending me the link about Fr Seraphim Bailey’s new book.

    • Gail Sheppard says

I’m glad I’m not seeing indifference on this list. We have to be warriors and defend the Faith.

“Indifference is unacceptable even for laymen, and all the more so for the clergy. An honest, spiritual man doesn’t do anything with indifference. “Cursed be he that doeth the work of the Lord deceitfully”, says the Prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 48:10). There’s a war on today, a holy war. I must be on the front lines. There are so many Marxists, so many Masons, so many Satanists and assorted others! So many possessed, anarchists and seduced ones! I see what awaits us, and it’s painful for me. The bitter taste of human pain is in my mouth.”

      • Warriors indeed needed, but also patient teachers and examples of Christ, and his Mother’s love. Our zeal may revolt the seekers, and the cradle Orthodox on their first real steps toward the journey of Theosis. Let’s not throw too much at them. If you will , baby steps.

Most Orthodox Christians are not ready, or understand this level of Orthodoxy. It take years of faithful discipleship with a good spiritual father, and a disciplined prayer life. That alone is a stuggle for most of us. I like to think myself a faithful servant, but still struggle with the the words of Saint Paissios, and other Holy Father’s teaching, and examples. Orthodox Christians should read The Holy Father’s teachings, but it must be gradual, under the guidance of our spiritual father. For one to jump into this level of Orthodoxy in the beginning of one’s sincere Orthodox journey, and struggle, is a recipe for failure, and/or cult like following, into only one aspect of Othodoxy. Balance, and proper pace over time is key. The beauty of Orthodoxy is how rich, and deep it is, but one in junior high, is not ready for College lessons, and methods. Tollhouse theories, venerating relics, demon attacks, the lifestyles of monks/nuns, saint like following of Elders, and prophesies, and miracles of Saints, can lead to many running for the door, especially converts, let alone the cradle Orthodox.

Okay okay. I know I still dont have you. What if the Jerusalem Church had their daughters join, “Maids of Molech?” Would that be okay? Its just a name for their little group, right?

What a joke. The GOA makes me sick

  9. Mark E. Fisus says

Is our society in thrall to demonic influences?

    When has it never?

    • George Michalopulos says

Mark, you are correct. My point is that the delusion of Secularism for all these decades has been that there are no spiritual forces at play. And thus those of us who are Christian are at a loss when we point out that the Secularists are “playing by the rules”, when clearly, they were most certainly not.

      • George

This is a home run point of yours that takes a while to sink in – perhaps because of our societal conditioning.

Regarding conspiracies and being dismissed by most because of serious attempted dialog concerning some of them

Probably the most relevant comment I can ever make on this site is that there is indeed a serious conspiracy at work affecting all of us. IMO it is the root cause of all the major issues at hand: EP issues, Crete, ecumenicism, lavender mafia, mutations of dioceses and metropolitan elevations, Ligonier, certain Western political entanglements and geo-political dominance issues, etc:

        Jesuit infiltration

        Who are the Jesuits?
What exactly do they believe? Official doctrine vs undisclosed doctrines?
What is the purpose and nature of their organization?
They named their telescope what??!! Why?

Bart taught, not just studied, but taught at Rome’s home base of the Jesuits.

There is so much to this issue, but it will be ignored by almost all. Fine. However, you might as well give up the fighting over this issue and that issue if you ignore this one. You will forever be chasing shadows, while the real perpetrators keep pulling strings making things happen

I do believe this issue is the real root cause of much, if not most, of everything going wrong. I also believe most will dismiss, ignore, or think I’m wacky as well

But theres more than ample evidence. I leave it to you to expound if you like

To those who would roll their eyes

        Sun Tzu Art Of War

        Also Psalm 2

        • George Michalopulos says

Billy Jack, you may be on to something. I seem to have forgotten that the EP studied at a Jesuit college in Rome. When we consider that fact, as well as the fact that the present pope is a Jesuit, it makes a lot of sense.

On this tangent, I’m in the process of reassessing my previously charitable view of Catholicism. Though I am sympathetic to Catholics and have some vestigial respect for the great Catholic institutions, it seems we’re left with two dissimilar things: an official Catholic Church which holds to its version of Christian dogma on the one hand and a sub rosa hierarchy within the bowels of the Vatican that is at odds with the official Church other. And that the latter is the one that is actually calling the shots.

This hidden elite is at the very least sympathetic to the New World Order if not actually a part of it. In other words, what you don’t see is what you get.

          • Gail Sheppard says

So, George, remind the list who first told you about the “end game.”

The news is peppered with articles about the EP’s and Pope’s joint concern for the environment, their meeting in Cairo, well wishes to the EP on his name day, strengthening ties with the Oriental Orthodox Church, uniting over relics, the opening of the 25th international ecumenical conference on Orthodox spirituality at the Bose monastic community, their joint meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and Imam Ahmen al-Tayyeb in September .. . . these guys are appearing together so often that soon, no one will be able to tell them apart. They’re behaving as if we already were one Church.

Perceptions are hard to undo. They have a way of becoming reality.

            • George Michalopulos says

Indeed! Gail, one of the pleasures of this blog has been getting to know all the people who contribute to this blog. Thanks to people like you, my mind and our collective knowledge has expanded exponentially.

Furthermore, I fervently believe that by increasing this knowledge, we have actually achieved some accountability and much transparency in the American Orthodox churches. We’re not home free but some days I feel like we’re rounding third base.

Keep up the good work! All of you!

        • Peter A. Papoutsis says

          True that times 100.

          Peter A Papoutsis

    • Mark

      You are absolutely correct

However, think in terms of degrees, rather than absolutes

  10. Short update:

According to one of my sources, Fr. Spyridon has been suspended by his bishop and is under attack from his fellow clergy because of this book, which, if anything, proves hat he’s made some very salient points.

Anyone who is interested in helping Fr. out should order some of his books from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/FATHER-SPYRIDON-BAILEY/e/B00GUGOVJE

His voice should not be silenced!

  11. Church under attack says

A source of mine has told me that Fr Spyridon Bailey has been suspended by his bishop, and is under attack by a umber of other clergy, for the above-mentioned book. If anything, it proves his point.

Help him out by buying some of his books on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/FATHER-SPYRIDON-BAILEY/e/B00GUGOVJE

    • Estonian Slovak says

May we know who his bishop is and the reason for him being suspended? It isn’t Metropolitan Kallistos Ware by any chance?

      • Church under attack says

Kallistos is only a titular bishop. He’s under the EP’s Archbishop in England, Gregorios.

I think the gist of it (from what I was told) is that they’re not taking too kindly to the anti-ecumenical position of his book.

Dissent will not be tolerated, suspensions will continue until tolerance improves, etc…
